Rutgers Hosts Georgetown in Crucial ECAC Contest
Apr 25 | Men's Lacrosse
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Rutgers men's lacrosse team returns home Saturday to face No. 4 Georgetown in a battle between two of the top three teams in the Eastern College Athletic Conference. The Hoyas will be the second Top Five opponent the Scarlet Knights have faced in their last three outings. The game will air live on CN8 at 1 p.m. as the ECAC Lacrosse Game of the Week. The action can be seen throughout CN8's entire market, ranging from Maine to Virginia, which encompasses over nine million homes.
Rutgers (5-6, 3-2), which has won three of its last four ECAC games, sits alone in third place in the league standings. The Scarlet Knights are coming off an 8-4 victory over Penn State Sunday. Sophomore Hunter Burnard (Binghamton, N.Y.) led the Scarlet Knights with a season-high four points on two goals and two assists, while classmate Justin Pennington (Flemington, N.J.) also tallied two goals. Sophomore goalie and current ECAC Defensive Player of the Week Billy Olin (Horseheads, N.Y.) posted seven of his 15 saves in the fourth quarter to shut down the PSU offense.
Georgetown (8-3, 4-1) enters the game having won seven of its last eight decisions, including a 12-8 victory over Massachusetts Saturday. The Hoyas used an eight-goal second half and got four scores from current ECAC Offensive Player of the Week Brendan Cannon to pick up their fourth conference victory. Cannon leads GU with 44 points on 23 goals and 21 assists.
The Scarlet Knights have never beaten Georgetown in 10 all-time meetings between the two schools. However, the last two games have been decided by a combined five goals. In 2006, the Hoyas topped RU 9-8 in Piscataway and last season the Scarlet Knights fell 12-8 in Washington, D.C. Junior Mike Dugan (Summit, N.J.) posted a goal and an assist in the road loss last year.
Georgetown will be Rutgers' eighth Top 20 opponent of the year and third opponent that has spent time in the Top Five. The Scarlet Knights fell to No. 1 Syracuse 19-7 on April 12, but topped UMBC, who is currently ranked No. 5, 13-4 on February 24.
Prior to the game, Rutgers will hold a special Senior Day ceremony to honor the team's five seniors. Lyle Farrar (Lexington, Va.), Nick Filippone (Northport, N.Y.), Chris Hoffmann (Cazenovia, N.Y.), Mike Sissler (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) and Chris White (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) will each be playing in their final game at Yurcak Field.
