PISCATAWAY, N.J. (October 11, 2009) – Rutgers field hockey dropped a 4-0 non-conference contest to Saint Joseph’s on Sunday afternoon at the Bauer Track and Field Complex. The Scarlet Knights moved to 1-13 while the Hawks improved to 4-7.
“I told the team (after the game) they need to dedicate the last four games to the seniors. The seniors are playing very urgently because they have had pressure,” said head coach Liz Tchou. “Everyone needs to perform around them as they may be over-extending themselves.”
Senior Brittany Bybel (Millville, N.J.) had the Scarlet Knights best scoring opportunity in the first half. The forward took a pass from freshman Chelsea Rota (Langhorne, Pa.) and continued upfield, moving to the right side and firing just inside of the circle. The ball hit the bar and corralled out-of-bounds.
The game remained scoreless until the 26th minute. Hawks forward Anne Schreuders fired a shot which was blocked by the RU defense. Sophomore forward Ellen Rowe was able to corral the loose ball on the right side, dribble and shoot into the left corner for the first score of the game with 8:25 to go in the half.
St. Joe’s added to its lead off their third penalty corner of the game. Schreuders tallied her team-best seventh goal of the season, sending the ball up into the very top left corner of the cage from the right side.
The Hawks increased their lead in the second half when Schreuders added her second goal of the game. She squeezed through traffic on the right side of the cage, scooting the ball past RU goalkeeper Vickie Lavell (Haddon Township, N.J.). The visitors scored another goal seven minutes later for the final score.
“We did not play well in the second half. I really thought we would finish today and get at least two or three goals in the first half and carry into the second half but they (St. Joe’s) had eight corners and you can’t give up eight corners,” said Tchou. “We are a talented group but we are not playing to our potential.”
