Rutgers Field Hockey Registers 5-2 Victory Over Rider

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (October 17, 2009) –Senior Brittany Bybel (Millville, N.J.) had a goal and two assists and four other Rutgers players added scores as Rutgers field hockey posted a 5-2 win over Rider at the Bauer Track and Field Complex.
“It was the week of practice that did it. We picked out drills at the start of the week and carried them through. It showed we can make changes and carry those changes and excellent practices into the game,” said head coach Liz Tchou. “It was a fight. They had several players on their team who were attack-oriented and I thought we really played as a team to stop any momentum.”
The Broncs (13-1) got on the board first, keeping the ball on their offensive side for the first seven minutes of the game. Jackie Adams fired off Rider’s third shot of the game but saw it turned away by RU goalkeeper Vickie Lavell (Haddon Township, N.J.). The attempt rolled back to Adams who quickly passed it to Erin McGinniss – camped on the left of the cage- for the score.
After its first two shots on goal were stopped, Rutgers answered with the equalizer at the 12:45 mark when Bybel tied the contest at 1-1 off a penalty corner opportunity.
Rutgers (2-13) took the lead on what would be the game-winner on an out-of-the-ordinary goal by sophomore forward Nicole Gentile (Jamison, Pa.). Gentile, nearly parallel with the goal on the left side, sent what looked to be a long pass from just inside of the cage into the crease. The ball changed direction on the wet turf, curved and bounced into the box for a 2-1 halftime lead.
The Scarlet Knights extended their lead in the second stanza. Bybel brought Rider goalie Lyndsie Johnson out of the cage in congestion to play her. Bybel moved the ball through Johnson’s legs, finding classmate Jessika Hoh (Allentown, Pa.). Hoh tapped it past Johnson for her team-best ninth goal of the season.
The Broncs’ leading scorer Megan Pisani responded with a rebound goal eight minutes later, but that would be the last score for the visitors.
Hoh sent a hard shot from the left side of the circle in the 59th minute. Senior Sarah Dunn (Eaton, N.Y.), sensing the ball was going to be just wide right, dove to deflect the shot into the cage for a 4-2 RU advantage.
The final tally came as time expired with Rutgers earning a penalty corner. The inbounds by senior Missy Bowman (Ronks, Pa.) was fielded by Jenna Bull (Oakville, Ontario) who slid the ball over to Bybel. Bybel elected to pass rather than shoot, scooting the ball to Bowman, who had just entered on left corner of the cage. Bowman knocked it in for the 5-2 final.
Rutgers travels to Lafayette for a 1:00 p.m. contest on Sunday, Oct. 18.
