Rutgers Field Hockey Falls to No. 7 UConn, 3-0

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (October 24, 2009) – Rutgers dropped a hard-fought 3-0 contest to No. 7 Connecticut in BIG EAST field hockey action on a rainy Saturday afternoon at the Bauer Track and Field Complex.
“I was so proud of our girls. The last two weeks we have been playing very well and actually, peaking,” said Rutgers head coach Liz Tchou. “It is very good to see them playing together and a purpose-from freshman all the way up to seniors. It’s a testament to the seniors and their leadership and what we’ve gone through in the last four years together.”
The Huskies (15-2) got on the board less than four minutes into the game on a perfectly executed corner. Sophomore Jestine Angelini put the ball into the right side of the cage with her sister Alicia Angelini and classmate Allison Angulo each earning credit for the assist.
UConn went up 2-0 eight minutes later on another corner opportunity. Loren Sherer found the back of the cage with the same duo grabbing the assists.
Rutgers (2-15) had a pair of great looks at the cage in the early going of the second half. Seniors Brittany Bybel (Millville, N.J.) and Sarah Dunn (Eaton, N.Y.) fired consecutive shot attempts but both were stopped by Huskies goalkeeper Andrea Maniero.
With 21 minutes to go, Bybel had a beautiful attempt sail just wide to the left as the next shot by Dunn also went wide.
The Huskies added a late goal – again, off a corner- in the 61st minute for the final score. UConn held an 11-7 advantage in shots and a 7-4 edge in penalty corners.
Scarlet Knights freshman goalkeeper Vickie Lavell (Haddon Township, N.J.) had five saves on the afternoon.
The game was the final home contest for six Rutgers seniors: Bybel, Dunn, Melissa Bowman, Jessika Hoh, Kristen Johnson and Chelsey Schwab.
