PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers dropped a 3-2 decision to Georgetown in BIG EAST field hockey action on Friday afternoon at Bauer Track and Field Complex. The loss knocked the Scarlet Knights to 0-9, 0-2 on the year while the Hoyas grabbed their first win and moved to 1-7, 1-0.
“They are not putting themselves out there and I am extremely disappointed, frustrated and upset that the team is not showing their potential as both individuals and as a team,” Tchou said after the game. “We are not playing together. The team must look at themselves in the mirror and say this is what I need to do to be more committed to each other on and off the field.”
Georgetown earned its second penalty corner of the game in the 29th minute. Off the inbounds, the setter Annika Bannon scooted the ball to her left to Kristen Volpe. The Hoyas leading goal scorer elected to not fire for the cage, instead slipping a pass to Annie Wilson. Wilson, perched on the right side of the box, knocked it around RU goalkeeper Shanice Beasley (Houston, Texas) for a 1-0 lead.
RU grabbed the first penalty corner of the second half but the shot by senior Chelsey Schwab (Pottstown, Pa.) was blocked less than two minutes into the period.
A few plays later junior Jenna Bull (Oakville, Ontario) took the ball on the right side and fired a shot which was blocked. The loose ball was picked up Sarah Dunn (Eaton, N.Y.), who crossed it to Brittany Bybel (Millville, N.J.) for her sixth score of the season.
The Hoyas went back ahead with 25:55 on the clock when Volpe found the back of the cage on her own. With a host of players scuffling in front of the cage, she was successful in corralling the loose ball for her fifth tally of the year.
Volpe had another chance two minutes later, streaking ahead as Beasley came out of the cage to play her. RU defender MacKenzie Noda (Allentown, Pa.) was able to break up the play before a shot was fired.
Rutgers knotted the score on a breakaway and open caged goal by freshman Chelsea Rota (Langhorne, Pa.) in the 53rd minute. Georgetown goalkeeper Clodagh Coghlan came out to play two fast charging RU players - Noda and Carlie Rouh (Berlin, N.J.). Rouh made a step to her left, catching Coghlan on her back leg as Rota entered the play to score in what would be an empty box.
GT would gain the advantage for the final time on a penalty corner goal with just over 17 minutes to go. Meggie Taylor scored her first goal of the season after a corner fake from Volpe caused the defense to shift.
Rutgers had a chance to tie with eight minutes to go when Bull shot the ball 20 yards ahead to Dunn, who only had the GU goalie to contend with. She couldn’t control the ball as the Hoyas defense caught up to eliminate any opportunity.
RU entertains Sacred Heart on Sunday, Sept. 27 at 2:00 p.m. The contest is designated as the first-ever “Pink” Game for Rutgers field hockey. There will be information available about breast cancer awareness, t-shirts will be sold with proceeds going towards the continual development of treatment research. Donations for the Power in Pink Campaign will also be accepted and as a token of our gratitude will receive a commemorative pink bracelet made by a field hockey student-athlete.
