PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Junior Jenna Bull (Oakville, Ontario) scored twice, including the game-winner, to help to lift Rutgers field hockey to a 4-3 victory over Sacred Heart on Sunday afternoon at Bauer Track and Field Complex. The win was the first of the season for the Scarlet Knights (1-9).
“The main thing today is that we stuck together the whole game,” said head coach Liz Tchou after the contest. “In past games when an opponent would score late, we would over-play, over-run and feel like every play was a last ditch effort. In this game, we continued to pass the ball into the midfield and back to the forward line so it was much more a team effort when it came to getting the ball out of the backfield.”
Bull would tally two scores- her third and fourth goals of the year – with 5:43 remaining in the game. The winning goal was off a penalty corner in the 67th minute. Bull stopped the ball off the inbounds from senior back Missy Bowman (Ronks, Pa.), pushed it to teammate Chelsey Schwab (Pottstown, Pa.) on the left when then passed the ball back to Bull on her right. Bull fired a blistering crack into the cage for the game-winner.
Bowman worked the ball around from right to left, passing to a wide-open Bull at the top of the circle for the preceding score. The junior one-timed her attempt, crashing it into the boards to tie the game at 3-3 at the 64:17 mark.
Rutgers scored the first two goals of the game. Schwab, just past the midfield line, sent a long pass upfield to a streaking Jessika Hoh (Allentown, Pa.) on the left side of the field. The senior, who went one-on-one with her defender, got an extra step on her opponent about seven yards from the cage, one-timing it in for the first score of the game. The goal was the team-leading eighth of the year for Hoh.
The Scarlet Knights added to it with another perfectly orchestrated offensive set as sophomore Kat Rodziewicz (Ocean, N.J.) drove the circle from the center, making the defense collapse. She passed the ball to senior forward Brittany Bybel (Millville, N.J.) who found the right far corner open for a 2-0 RU advantage.
The Pioneers only had three shots in the first half but two were in the last seven seconds. After earning a penalty corner, Dana Luhrs took a shot from the left side as the horn expired but the play was not ruled dead because it originated from a corner. Chelsea Carlson took the opportunity to knock in the rebound shot for the goal and make it a 2-1 game at the half.
After tying the game at 2-2 early in the second half, Sacred Heart took the lead with 11 minutes to go following a strong defensive play that turned offensive. Kelsey Zeyher picked the ball from Schwab at midfield line and darted upfield, electing to pass to Luhrs – for the goal - as RU freshman goalkeeper Vickie Lavell (Haddon Township, N.J.) came out to play her.
Rutgers outshot Sacred Heart, 26-7 and posted a 11-2 advantage in penalty corners.
Today’s game marked Rutgers first ‘pink’ contest. The Scarlet Knights donned pink gear for Under Armour’s Power in Pink campaign to raise money for breast cancer awareness.
Rutgers hits the road for a pair of games next weekend in Louisville, Kentucky. The Scarlet Knights take on BIG EAST foe Louisville on Friday, Oct. 2 at 3:00 p.m. and face Michigan State on Sat., Oct. 3 at 2:00 p.m.
