WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Rutgers dropped a 2-1 decision to Appalachian State in collegiate field hockey action Sunday at Busch Stadium on the campus of the College of William & Mary.
"It was a tough weekend to say the least. There are specific improvements made after each game we've played, which can be seen as a positive; we are improving," said head coach Liz Tchou . "The frustration has been that the outcomes have been losses. We need to continue to improve each and every practice, and I am confident that the wins will come."
Rutgers (0-4) had four scoring opportunities in the first eleven minutes of the game, only to see ASU’s defense turn them away each time. After RU forward Sarah Dunn had her shot stopped by Mountaineers keeper Bridgette Street, ASU’s offense took off on a breakaway with Jessie Harris scoring from the left side with 11:22 on the clock.
Just over a minute later, Rutgers answered behind the stick of senior forward Jessika Hoh (Allentown, Pa.). Hoh registered her third goal of the year when she put back a deflection off an ASU defender.
The game remained knotted until just over five minutes to go in the game. ASU forward Kelsey Dorset went around her defender at the top of the circle, firing a shot into the corner of the box for the game-winner.
Rutgers outshot ASU, 22-4 and collected a 10-3 advantage in penalty corners. Freshman Vickie Lavell (Haddon Township, N.J.) earned her first start and showing in goal for Rutgers, posting two saves.
"We need to be more composed under pressure and decision-making needs to improve. This will be one of the focuses for the week, along with finishing," Tchou adds. "All of our games have been within our grasp to win. We need to learn from these experiences, and play hard and smart for the full 70 minutes of hockey."
The Scarlet Knights return to action on Friday, Sept. 11, traveling to Delaware.
