Pennington Named to All-BIG EAST Preseason Lacrosse Team

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Jan. 28, 2010) – Senior midfielder Justin Pennington (Flemington, N.J. ) of the Rutgers men’s lacrosse team was named to the All-BIG EAST preseason team, the conference announced Wednesday. Rutgers was tabbed fifth in the league’s preseason poll with 19 points.
Pennington competed in 14 games with eight starts last season. The Inside Lacrosse All-American Honorable Mention notched 32 points on 16 goals and 16 assists.
The Scarlet Knights ended the 2009 season with a 4-11 record. RU will serve as a member of the BIG EAST conference beginning in 2010 after playing in the ECAC conference.
Along with Rutgers, the six other conference schools that will participate in the newly formed league are Georgetown, Notre Dame, Providence, St. John’s, Syracuse and Villanova. The teams will play a six-game single round-robin regular season schedule. RU will open BIG EAST play March 27 at Notre Dame with a noon start.
Syracuse was tabbed as the preseason favorite for the conference. SU is coming off its second straight NCAA Championship and a 16-2 record.
For the coaches’ preseason poll, the league’s seven head coaches cast the votes and were not permitted to vote for their own programs. Syracuse’s Stephen Keogh was named the BIG EAST Preseason Attack Player of the Year, while Georgetown’s Barney Ehrmann was selected the BIG EAST Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.
Rutgers opens the regular season in Staten Island, N.Y. where it battles Wagner on Feb. 21. at 1 p.m.
