Rutgers Field Hockey Shuts Out Providence, 1-0
Oct 16 | Field Hockey
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (October 16, 2010) – Junior forward Nicole Gentile (Jamison, Pa.) scored the game’s lone tally, leading Rutgers field hockey to a 1-0 victory over Providence in BIG EAST action on Saturday.
The goal was the team-best fourth game-winner of the season for Gentile. With the win, the Scarlet Knights moved to 6-9 and 2-3 in league play. The Friars fall to 3-11 and 0-4 in BIG EAST action.
Freshman goalkeeper Sarah Stuby (Roxbury, N.J.) had five saves en route to her second-straight shutout.
As a group and a team, we played tough defensively which is something we haven’t done in the past,” said head coach Liz Tchou after the win. “It’s a testament to the team to shutout Providence, showing how much they truly wanted it. I thought (junior) Christie Morad had an amazing game and Sarah Stuby played spectacular in goal.”
The Scarlet Knights registered the game’s first and what would be the only score at the 13:05 mark.
“We ran a corner from the other side of the field, taking it from the right (instead of the left) and gave it to freshman Gia Nappi, who has an extremely hard shot. It was a new play that we had just implemented yesterday,” said Tchou.
Nappi’s attempt was saved by PC goalie Kathi Weidman. The ball bounced off of the goalie and found the stick of Gentile, who knocked it in for her team-best ninth strike of the year.
Providence earned its seventh and final penalty corner of the game as time was set to expire, but the shot by Julie Ruggieri was off the mark sealing the RU triumph.
Rutgers faces No. 20 Stanford on Sunday, Oct. 17 at 1:30 p.m. at Providence.
“Stanford is a very good team, ranked in the top-20. We relayed to the kids this was a great win, but we want to play effectively in back-to-back games,” Tchou added. “The team wasn’t satisfied with today’s win, they want to improve some of the things that did go wrong (today) and put it together tomorrow versus the Cardinal.”
