PISCATAWAY, N.J. (October 22, 2010) – Rutgers field hockey posted a 2-0 victory over Columbia on Friday afternoon at Bauer Track and Field Complex. Freshman Gia Nappi (Fairfield, N.J.) tallied the game-winner, her second of the season, to lift the Scarlet Knights to their seventh win of the season.
Goalkeeper Sarah Stuby (Roxbury, N.J.), who registered four saves, picked up her third shutout of the season.
“We weathered the storm in the first 20 minutes as they came at us,” said head coach Liz Tchou. “Towards the end of the first half, we started to control the tempo. The players figured it out on the field and made the necessary changes. That momentum carried into the second half. I was very pleased with the effort today.”
Columbia (8-6) grabbed four penalty corners in the first 15 minutes of the game, unable to score. Rutgers senior Jenna Bull (Oakville, Ontario) made run up the left side just prior to the half. Bull forced the ball into the circle, causing Lions goalkeeper Christie O’Hara to leave the cage. A mad scramble ensued with Nappi knocking in the loose ball for the 1-0 lead with 1:56 to go before the half.
The Scarlet Knights (7-10) added insurance in the second stanza on the first goal of the season by juniorBridgette Sands (Glassboro, N.J.). Nappi, at the top of the crease, passed to junior Nicole Gentile (Jamison, Pa.). Gentile, perched on the left side of the cage, shot a bullet up the line which Sands tipped in.
