Piscataway. N.J. (October 24, 2010) – The Rutgers field hockey team (8-10) recorded its second consecutive shutout by downing Bucknell (6-11) at Bauer Track and Field Complex, 3-0. On senior day, it was a pair of freshmen who came up big for the Scarlet Knights. Gia Nappi (Fairfield, N.J.) led the offense, recording four points on the day with a goal and two assists, while classmate Sarah Stuby (Roxbury, N.J.) kept the Bison of the scoreboard by making four timely saves.
“I was happy for the seniors and for our team,” said head coach Liz Tchou. “I’m happy for them because they deserve to feel success and feel wins and I think in the second half of our season we’ve done a great job of learning how to win these games.”
After a defensive battle in the first half, Rutgers’ offense exploded for three goals in an eight minute stretch in the second.
RU got its first tally at the 60:34 mark off a beautifully drawn up corner play. MacKenzie Noda (Allentown, Pa.) sent the ball in to Nappi who took a shot which was deflected into the cage by Christie Morad (Marlton, N.J.).
Less than three minutes later, the Scarlet Knights were on the board again when Nappi made a skillful run that split the Bucknell defense and found Lisa Patrone (Washington Township, N.J.) who rifled the shot past a diving keeper to give RU a 2-0 lead.
RU closed out its scoring at the 67:38 mark when Nappi took a loose ball in front of the cage and fired it into the back of the cage to secure the Scarlet Knights’ eighth win of the season.
The Scarlet Knights close out their regular season on Saturday, Oct. 30, when they travel to Storrs, Conn. for a matchup with BIG EAST rival UConn.
