Rutgers Field Hockey Advances to BIG EAST Tournament
Oct 30 | Field Hockey
STORRS, Conn. (October 30, 2010) –Despite a 6-0 loss to the No. 4 UConn Huskies, Rutgers was able to qualify for its first BIG EAST Tournament since 2003. Rutgers and Villanova each finished the regular season tied for fourth in the conference at 2-4, but the Scarlet Knights held the tiebreaker thanks to a 4-2 victory over the Wildcats on Sept. 24.
RU tried to jump on the Huskies early when Nicole Gentile (Jamison, Pa.) fired a shot in the second minute that seemed to be headed for back of the cage, but UConn’s Kim Kryzk made a key defensive save to keep RU off the board. The Huskies used the momentum from Kryzk’s defensive save to get on the board less than two minutes later converting on a penalty corner.
Two minutes after their first goal, the Huskies were on the board again scoring off another corner. UConn added another tally before the horn to take a 3-0 lead into the half.
Coming out of the break, UConn kept the momentum scoring another three goals to claim a 6-0 victory.
For the match RU was led by freshman goalkeeper Sarah Stuby (Roxbury, N.J.) who made six saves in a losing effort.
The Scarlet Knights will be back in action on Saturday, Nov. 6, at 11 a.m. when they take on BIG EAST regular season champion Syracuse in the 1 vs. 4 matchup of the BIG EAST Tournament.
