JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (April 10, 2010) – The Rutgers men’s lacrosse team suffered its toughest loss of the season Saturday afternoon when it fell to Jacksonville, 17-10, at the Ashley Sports Complex.
The Scarlet Knights (5-4, 1-1) never held a lead against the Dolphins (5-6) and trailed by at least three goals for the final 14:35 of the contest.
Senior midfielder Justin Pennington (Flemington, N.J.) scored a team-best three goals on seven shots. The hat trick is Pennington’s third of the season and eighth of his career. The three-time BIG EAST Weekly Honor Selection has scored a point in 18 straight games.
Senior attackman Adam Goldberg (Fayetteville, N.J.) scored a pair of goals on five shots. Goldberg has scored multiple goals four times this season.
Senior midfielder Gerhard Buehning (Essex Fells, N.J.), freshman attackman Duncan Clancy (Princeton, N.J.), sophomore midfielder Michael Diehl (Flemington, N.J.), junior attachman Kory Kelly (Princeton, N.J.) and senior attackman Tad Stanwick (Baltimore, Md.) all scored a goal.
Defensively, redshirt-sophomore Andrew D’Agostino (Syracuse, N.Y) had a strong performance with six ground balls and a season-best four caused turnovers.
Three Scarlet Knights saw action in goal for only the second time this season. Senior Billy Olin (Horseheads, N.Y.) got his third straight start and protected the net for the first half. Freshman Rudy Butler (Belle Mead, N.J.) started the second half and played the first 21:36 before being relieved by fellow RU rookie Joseph Donnelly (Newtown, Sq., Pa.) who closed out the game.
It was the first time Donnelly had seen action since the season opener at Wagner on Feb. 21.
For Jacksonville, six Dolphins scored multiple goals, led by TJ Kenary who netted a game-high five.
Rutgers will be on short rest for its next game as the squad will play at Princeton on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast by Verizon FiOS1 via tape delay.
