PISCATAWAY, N.J. (August 22, 2010) – The Rutgers University field hockey team played its only exhibition of the season on Sunday afternoon, tying the University of Delaware 1-1 at the Bauer Track and Field Complex.
The Scarlet Knights outshot the Blue Hens 18-14 in the contest, including a 10-5 advantage in the second half. RU sophomore goalkeeper Vickie Lavell (Haddon Township, N.J.) was rewarded with nine saves.
“Vickie has really come out of her shell and is communicating to the players in front of her extremely well,” said head coach Liz Tchou. “With one full year under her belt, I expect great things from her this season.”
Rutgers earned six corner opportunities in the first 13 minutes of the game. UD would shift the offensive advantage by collecting four of the next five penalty corners, which included the game’s first score. Tory Sharpless found the back of the cage from 13 yards out off a corner.
The Scarlet Knights’ score would come with just over 21 minutes to play in regulation. Sophomore newcomer Cornelia Duffin (Moorestown, N.J.) worked the ball around her defender on the left side, scooting it across the circle to sophomore Carlie Rouh (Berlin, N.J.). Rouh fired into the far end of the cage for a 1-1 tie.
“We will look to be a more attacking team this year, to be able to attack inside the 25,” said Tchou. “I thought we did a much better job in the second half, especially with the four corners earned in the last five minutes of the game. It is really now about getting the chemistry together, work different patterns on the field so they know each other.”
Rutgers commences the 2010 season on Friday, August 27 at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va.
