HARRISONBURG, Va. (August 29, 2010) – Rutgers field hockey dropped a 1-0 decision to William & Mary on Sunday at the JMU Field Hockey Complex.
The Scarlet Knights (0-2) held a decisive 8-3 advantage in penalty corners and outshot the Tribe (1-1) by a 9-7 count. RU had six of its shot attempts thwarted in the final 25 minutes.
"We played with a lot of passion today,” said head coach Liz Tchou. “We created many scoring opportunities, but were not able to capitalize on them. We must work on our discipline and composure in the circle to finish. It was good to see our defense improve after Friday's loss to JMU."
The Tribe tallied the game’s lone goal in the 44thminute off a penalty corner when Rebecca Wagner scooted the ball past RU goalkeeper Vickie Lavell (Haddon Township, N.J.) on the left side. Lavell would face only two shots on goal all afternoon from the Tribe.
Junior Nicole Gentile (Jamison, Pa.) led the Scarlet Knights with three shots, all on goal. Classmate Christie Morad (Marlton, N.J.) also accounted for three shots.
Rutgers opens its home season this coming weekend, hosting Ohio on Friday, Sept. 3 at 4 p.m. and Richmond on Sunday, Sept. 5 at 1 p.m.
