PISCATAWAY, N.J. (September 3, 2010) - Junior Christie Morad (Marlton, N.J.) tallied the game-winner with less than three minutes to play to lift Rutgers to a 2-0 victory over Ohio in collegiate field hockey action on Friday at Bauer Track and Field Complex.
Sophomore goalkeeper Vickie Lavell (Haddon Township, N.J.) had four saves for the Scarlet Knights (1-2).
“I think we stuck together as a team and knew what we were supposed to do. We had a couple of scares, but communication was really the key in the first half,” Lavell said after the game. “It feels so good to get that first win. It is a weight off our shoulders and it boosts our confidence because we know what we can do.”
Despite an 8-1 shot and a 6-2 penalty corner advantage in the first half, the Bobcats (1-3) were unable to find the cage. Ohio had its first opportunity at the 3:39 mark when Cathryn Altdoerffer failed to convert a penalty stroke.
In a span of 1:17 during the first stanza, the Bobcats grabbed three-straight penalty corners – only to see two shot attempts thwarted by Lavell and the third sail just wide right.
Rutgers, who played a tentative first half, picked up its intensity in the second stanza. Four of the team’s five total shots came in the half.
The winning score originated from a penalty corner. After not getting off a shot attempt from the corner, the bouncing ball ended up on the stick of Morad on the left side of the circle. She fired from five yards out going left to right, skipping past a pair of Ohio defenders, to record her first career goal.
“We kept the ball in the circle and that was all we needed to do,” Morad said. “I was shooting for a goal, shooting for the win.”
The Scarlet Knights entertain the Richmond Spiders on Sunday, Sept. 5 at 12 p.m. The Spiders (1-1) face Monmouth on Saturday in West Long Branch.
