PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Oct. 17, 2011) – The Rutgers men’s lacrosse team concluded its fall season by competing in a pair of scrimmages Sunday against UMass and Maryland. The two exhibition games provided first-year head coach Brian Brecht the opportunity to continue the implementation of his plans for the RU squad.
“My staff and I have been encouraged with all the time we spent this fall getting to know everyone,” Brecht said. “I have been very pleased with the energy and how receptive they have been to the new staff, new systems and new terminology. It has been a great fall getting to know what our strengths and weaknesses are as we head into our winter workouts.”
Rutgers’ weekend foes of UMass (Colonial Athletic Association) and Maryland (Atlantic Coast Conference) were outstanding opponents to scrimmage against, according to Brecht.
“What better way to challenge and measure ourselves than having two great programs that are very well coached here to finish out the fall season,” Brecht said. “Maryland is coming off a Final Four appearance after playing in the NCAA Championship game and UMass is very talented with a lot of seasoned veterans that certainly played like a team that will compete in the playoffs after seeing them in action.”
Brecht was pleased with the approach that was taken by the Scarlet Knights in readying themselves for the weekend action.
"I was very impressed with how we handled this week in our preparation,” Brecht said. “We have a lot of work to do, but there were bright spots throughout the day that myself and the coaching staff are encouraged with."
In addition to the day of lacrosse, more than $500 was collected in donations for the Eric LeGrand Believe Fund. Brecht was proud of the RU supporters’ contributions.
"After a good day of lacrosse on the field, it was great to see all the families, friends and fans that came out to watch the scrimmages who were able to donate and contribute more than $500 to the Believe Fund on behalf of Eric LeGrand who was injured a year ago while competing as a Rutgers student-athlete,” Brecht said.
