Providence, R.I. (April 16, 2011) – Extending its win streak to eight games, including six-straight in BIG EAST play, Rutgers softball (18-21, 6-5) downed Providence College (17-25, 3-10) by scores of 8-1 and 10-1 Saturday at Raymond Field. The eight-game winning streak and the six-straight conference wins are the longest runs without a loss since April of 1996.
Freshman Megan Williams (Richmond, Va.) earned her ninth win of the season in game one, allowing just one run (unearned) on three hits. The righty struck out two batters as she pitched a complete game.
Junior Mikelyn Messina (Prospect, Conn.) put the Scarlet Knights on the board with one swing of the bat in the second inning. Messina swung at the first pitch, taking it deep over the center field wall for her seventh blast of the season.
Rutgers added two more runs in the third, as sophomore Jen Harabedian (Flemington, N.J.) worked a walk with one out. The second baseman stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball before senior Mandy Craig (Manassas, Va.) smacked a hit back up the middle to put RU up, 2-0. Junior Brittney Lindley (Cicero, N.Y.) smoked a ball to the left field wall for a double, scoring Craig and putting the Scarlet Knights up three runs.
After making a double play in the field, Harabedian doubled to deep right to lead off the fifth inning. After freshman Loren Williams (Los Angeles, Calif.) worked a four-pitch walk, Craig bunted for a single and a throwing error by PC pitcher Corinne Clauss allowed Harabedian to score. A Lindley walk loaded the bases and Messina singled to the shortstop and Madden continued the scoring with a walk to put RU up 6-0. After an error by the PC first baseman scored a run, Lindsey Curran (Monroe Twp., N.J.) blasted a double down the right field line to give RU an eight run lead.
PC added a run in the bottom of the fifth with two singles and a RU error.
Sophomore Abbey Houston (New Egypt, N.J.) earned the win for RU in game two, allowing one run on four hits in five innings. The righty fanned a season high tying five batters without a walk.
With runners on first and second, sophomore Kaci Madden (Saratoga, N.Y.) sent a blooper into right center for a RBI single to put RU up 1-0 early in game two. The Friars knotted the game in the bottom half of the first inning with two-out hits by Justine Stratton and Jessie Bryant.
Rutgers added five runs in the second, started off by walks by Curran and Loren Williams. Craig continued her hot streak with a single up the middle. The PC center fielder threw a rocket to the catcher, who couldn’t handle it, allowing a run to score. Two more walks to Lindley and Messina scored a run and loaded the bases for Madden, who hit a frozen rope to right field, scoring two runs. Madden and Messina used a double steal to give the Scarlet Knights a five-run advantage.
The Scarlet Knights took an 8-1 lead in the third, as Curran doubled and Harabedian singled to lead off the inning. Craig drove in two RBI with a single to right field. Rutgers extended its lead to nine in the fifth with two runs on two hits and a PC error, including a RBI double by Lindley.
Rutgers finishes the three-game series with Providence tomorrow at Raymond Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
