PHILADELPHIA. Pa (April 26, 2011) – The Rutgers men’s lacrosse team (5-8, 0-4 BIG EAST) fell to the No. 9/10 Villanova Wildcats (10-3, 2-2 BIG EAST), 12-7, this evening at Villanova Stadium in Philadelphia, Pa. For the game, the Scarlet Knights were led by Kevin Hover (Belle Mead, N.J.) who recorded a hat trick.
Villanova started the game strong scoring a pair of quick goals to jump out to a 2-0 advantage. RU quickly responded scoring two goals of its own to even the score. Hover tallied the first goal when he took a pass from Will Mangan (Maplewood, N.J.) and deposited it into the back of the cage. Mike Diehl (Flemington, N.J.) scored on a man-up opportunity off a beautiful pass from Duncan Clancy (Princeton, N.J.) 47 seconds later to even the score. Unfortunately for RU, the Wildcats were able to run off the next three goals to end the first with a 5-2 lead.
RU struck first in the second quarter when Scott Klimchak (Clark, N.J.) rifled a shot past the Villanova keeper off a nifty feed from Clancy, cutting the VU lead to 5-3. The Wildcats struck again just before the intermission to take a three goal advantage into the locker room.
After Villanova opened scoring in the third period, the Scarlet Knights answered with two goals of their own. Klimchak got the RU run started taking a feed from Clancy and firing into the top corner of the net. Less than two minutes later, Diehl was on the receiving end of a Clancy feed cashing in to cut the Villanova lead to two at 7-5.
The Wildcats responded strong, running off the next three goals to take a 10-5 before Hover found the back of the goal for a second time on the evening at the 11:45 mark of the fourth period. Villanova scored another pair to push its lead to 12-6 before Hover completed his hat trick off a feed from Zach Zenda (Monmouth Jct., N.J.) to close out the scoring for the game.
The Scarlet Knights return to action on Saturday, April 30, when they welcome BIG EAST rival Georgetown to Yurcak Field for a 7 p.m. matchup.
