PISCATAWAY, N.J. (April 7, 2011) – Rutgers softball (13-21) swept Iona (10-14) by scores of 8-0 and 11-3 Thursday in two five-inning routs at the RU Softball Complex. The Scarlet Knights were led by junior Brittney Lindley (Cicero, N.Y.) who hit .800 on the day and senior Mickenzie Alden (Spokane, Wash.) who drove in five RBI.
Junior Noelle Sisco (Towaco, N.J.) earned her fourth win of the season in game one, allowing three hits in five innings for her first career shutout. The righty fanned four and did not walk a batter.
Rutgers struck first in the bottom of the first inning, as Mandy Craig (Manassas, Va.) reached on an error by the third baseman and Lindley advanced her by pushing a single through the left side. After junior Mikelyn Messina (Prospect, Conn.) was hit by a pitch, Kaci Madden (Saratoga, N.Y.) dropped a double on the right field line to bring in two runs.
Lindley and Madden got the Scarlet Knights out of a jam in the third. With the bases loaded, Lindley fielded a grounder and fired to home, getting the force. Madden faked a throw to first and threw back to Lindley for the tag to get out of the inning.
Messina tripled to the right field wall, starting a three-run rally in the bottom of the third. Madden pushed a hit though the left side to bring the run in and give RU a 3-0 lead. Ashley Bragg (Middletown, Del.) faked a bunt and notched a single to the shortstop, putting runners on first and second. Alden brought in a run with a single to right field and Lindsey Curran (Monroe Twp., N.J.) ended the offensive outburst with a RBI double to right center.
The Scarlet Knights added two more scores in the fourth, as Loren Williams (Los Angeles, Calif.) used her speed to drop a bunt single in front of the plate and steal second. Lindley smacked the ball up the middle to score the freshman and Messina took the first pitch she saw to right center, scoring Lindley and giving RU a 7-0 lead. Craig ended the game with a single up the middle, scoring Harabedian.
Freshman Megan Williams (Richmond, Va.) earned the win in game two, allowing three runs on eight hits, fanning one batter.
RU jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning of game two, led by Messina’s RBI single through the left side. The Scarlet Knights added a run in the second, as Lindley hit a sacrifice fly deep in foul territory.
Rutgers broke out in the fourth, scoring seven runs on six hits. Sophomore Jen Harabedian (Flemington, N.J.) hit her first career home run in the fourth to start the rally. After a Loren Williams double to right center, Craig singled up the middle to score the freshman. With the bases loaded, Alden hit a frozen rope for a double to bring in two runs.
After a two-run home run by Iona’s Jodi Petersen in the top of the fifth, Alden ended the game with a RBI single through the right side, scoring Lindley.
The Scarlet Knights return to BIG EAST play over the weekend with a three-game series against in-state rival Seton Hall. The Saturday doubleheader starts at noon.
