Facing Off
After downing Wagner (Feb. 19), 20-10, with its best scoring output since 2010, the Rutgers men's lacrosse team travels to Baltimore, Md., to take on the UMBC Retrievers Saturday, Feb. 23 at 1 p.m. The contest marks the first road game of the season for the Scarlet Knights and will be just the second matchup of the year for the Retrievers.
Scouting the UMBC Retrievers
The Retrievers have played just one game in 2013, and fell in a close contest to Robert Morris, 12-9 (Feb. 16).
Rutgers holds a 9-6 all-time record against the Retrievers in a series that dates back to 1980. Last season, Rutgers fell to UMBC at home, 11-7 on Feb. 26.
The Retrievers are led offensively by attackman Scott Jones, who scored four goals in the team's opener. Defensively, Zach Esser provided the most output against RMU, causing a team-best four turnovers and collecting three groundballs.
Rutgers Downs Wagner, 20-10
In its best scoring output since 2010, the Rutgers men's lacrosse team downed Wagner, 20-10, on the RU Turf Field at the Stadium Complex (Feb. 19). The Scarlet Knights (2-1) jumped out to an early 6-0 lead and wouldn't look back.
RU was led by six points (4 goals, 2 assists) from junior A Nick DePaolera (Kinnelon, N.J.), five points (4 goals, 1 assist) from junior A Scott Klimchak (Clark, N.J.) and four points (3 goals, 1 assist) from sophomore M Brian Goss (Arlington Heights, Ill.).
Scoring Outburst
The Scarlet Knights scored 20 goals against the Seahawks, its most since tallying 24 in a win over Wagner on Feb. 21, 2010. Seven different Rutgers players tallied multi-point games, 11 scored goals and 13 had at least one point.
Balanced Attack-Man
DePaolera has been strong in all phases of the offense this season for RU. He showed off his scoring skills against Manhattan (Feb. 10) by posting a career-high five goals. He followed that up by providing the helpers against Air Force (Feb. 16), notching a career-best five assists. Then, he tallied four goals and two assists against Wagner (Feb. 19). He leads the team in goals (9), assists (7) and points with 16.
Giving it his All-eyne
Freshman GK Kris Alleyne (New City, N.Y.) recorded an impressive 19 saves in the loss to Air Force to keep the Scarlet Knights in the game. In the opener against Manhattan, he allowed just six goals. He gave up just five in the win over Wagner (Feb. 19). He currently holds a 7.98 GAA with a .639 save percentage.
Facing Off
Sophomore Joseph Nardella (Cazenovia, N.Y.) has been dominant in the faceoff circle through three games. The specialist is 54-76 (.711 percent) this season, including a 21-24 performance against Manhattan in the opener.
