COLLEGE PARK, Md. - On a cold Maryland afternoon, Rutgers bid for its first Big Ten Conference road win was thwarted as No. 2 Maryland defeated the Scarlet Knights by a 4-0 score. With the result, Rutgers falls to 6-9, 1-6 in the Big Ten, while Maryland improved to 13-2, 5-1 B1G.
"The team played hard," head coach Meredith Long said. "Overall, I'm pleased with how we competed against one of the top teams in the country. We are coming away from the weekend with some good team focus points moving forward."
Maryland got an early goal off a penalty corner, as Sarah Sprink cracked in a shot for the first Terrapin goal. Another corner was capitalized on by Maryland eight minutes later. Shevaun Hayes (Melbourne, Australia) made the initial save, but Maxine Fluharty flicked in the rebound chance for a 2-0 lead.
The only goals in the first stanza came off the two penalty corner chances, and Maryland took the 2-0 lead into halftime.
In the second half, Maryland's third goal came 11 minutes in, as Moira Putch collected a pass with her back to the net, turned around and scored. The fourth UMD goal was Sprink's second of the game coming on a shot in the waning minutes of the game.
Rutgers best offensive chances came on two late shots on goal by forward Katie Champion (Egg Harbor, N.J.), but each was turned aside by the Maryland goalkeeper.
Making her 15th consecutive start in net for the Scarlet Knights, Hayes made 7 saves.
Rutgers' next game is at home on Sunday, Oct. 26, when the Scarlet Knights will host James Madison at 2 p.m.
