Two Rutgers Alumni Win MLL Championship

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (August 24, 2014) – Two Rutgers lacrosse alumni won the Major League Lacrosse title as Chris O’Dougherty and Justin Pennington helped lead the Denver Outlaws to a MLL Championship. Both played keys roles in the game as Denver rallied late for a 12-11 victory.
Pennington, a USILA Honorable Mention All-American for the Scarlet Knights in both 2008 and 2010, recorded two assists in the championship game. He had the key assist on the game-winning goal, as he fed Drew Snider for the goal that broke an 11-11 tie in the final minute. Pennington also had an assist in Denver’s semifinal victory, a 14-13 win over the New York Lizards. He finished the regular season with a career-high 12 goals.
O’Dougherty, a 2007 USILA Honorable Mention All-American and 2009 Rutgers graduate, was a fixture for the Outlaws on defense during their playoff run. He finished his third professional season with the championship.
Overall, six Rutgers alumni were on Major League Lacrosse rosters this season. Brendan Porter and Will Mangan were members of the Boston Cannons, while Chris Mattes and Duncan Clancy were with the Florida Launch. Keith Cromwell, who is the Scarlet Knights’ all-time leading goal-scorer, is an associate coach for the Lizards.
