STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The No. 16 Rutgers men's lacrosse team got off to a strong start on the road, but was unable to capitalize, falling 15-6 at No. 18 Stony Brook. The loss was the first of the season (5-1) for the Scarlet Knights. Stony Brook improved to 4-1 on the year.
Christian Trasolini led Rutgers with two goals and two assists. Adam Charalambides also scored twice, while Scott Bieda had a goal and an assist.
Stony Brook outshot RU 40-34 in the game. They also held a 35-24 advantage in ground balls. RU was a perfect 13-of-13 on clears.
Rutgers came out of the gates strong, scoring twice in the first 3:16 of the game. It was Trasolini who scored both goals, first finishing a feed from Bieda on an extra-man opportunity, then shortly after adding an unassisted goal. A goal from Charalambides gave RU a 3-0 lead after 14 minutes. The Seawolves added a late goal in the quarter to make it 3-1. Rutgers held possession for most of the quarter, outshooting the home squad 11-5.
While Rutgers dominated the first, the second quarter belonged to Stony Brook. Using the momentum from a late goal at the end of the first, the Seawolves scored five straight goals. After cutting the deficit to 3-2, SBU scored an extra-man goal to tie the game, and went ahead on a tally just 16 seconds later after picking up and cashing in on a loose ball in front of the RU net.
The home squad would take a 5-3 lead into halftime. Despite a two-goal deficit, RU was leading the Seawolves in shots (18-16) and ground balls (14-12).
Scott Bieda started the second half off with a goal, getting Rutgers back within one at 5-4. Stony Brook came back with the next three goals to go ahead 8-4.
Charalambides got one back for Rutgers, wrapping around the net to score. However, SBU drew a penalty and converted on the extra-man just thirty seconds later. The Seawolves finished the frame strong, outscoring RU 7-2 in the frame.
In the fourth quarter, freshman Zackary Franckowiak scored his third goal of the season. However, the Seawolves pulled away and held on for the victory.
The Scarlet Knights next game will come Monday night. RU will travel down to Princeton to face their in-state rival at 7 p.m.

Adam Charalambides has had at least two goals in every game this season.
Scott Bieda extended his point streak (26 games) and goal streak (14 games). Each of those streaks is among the 10 longest in the nation.
Rutgers is 102-of-108 on clears this season. That percentage (.944) leads the nation.
Chris Groel and Chad Toliver each made their first start of the season.
Stony Brook now leads the all-time series 6-4.
