Groothuis and van Schaik Named Second Team All-Big Ten
Nov 01 | Field Hockey
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Two members of Rutgers field hockey earned all-conference accolades Wednesday. Daphne Groothuis and Linde van Schaik were each named Second Team All-Big Ten. Simrin Dhillon was named a Big Ten Sportsmanship honoree.
"I am so pleased Daphne and Linde have been recognized by the Big Ten Conference for their performances this season," head coach Meredith Civico said. "With her energy and ability, Daphne has had a positive impact on the program from the moment she arrived on campus. As a junior captain, Linde has led the team this season. Playing multiple roles on the field, she has demonstrated poise and leadership. Above all else, these individual awards are recognition for what our young team as a whole has achieved this season."
Groothuis had a breakthrough freshman season, leading the team with 22 points and eight assists. She shared the team-lead with seven goals with van Schaik. The native of Nieuwerkerk ad IJssel, Netherlands, had four game-winning goals, including the game-winning goal in overtime against No. 12 Stanford and the lone goal of the game in a 1-0 victory at Penn. Groothuis was twice named Big Ten Freshman of the Week and had two multi-goal games, including a hat trick in her second career game.
Van Schaik finished her junior season with seven goals and five assists for 19 points. The native of Amsterdam, Netherlands, had a career-high six points in a game against Towson, and had both of the team's goals in a 2-1 win at Cornell. A team captain this season, she has 17 goals and 11 assists for 45 points in her career. This is her second time as a Second Team All-Big Ten selection, also earning the accolade as a freshman.
Dhillon served as a team captain for the Scarlet Knights this season. The senior back appeared in 13 games (three starts) and had a defensive save. She played in 47 games with 11 starts in her Rutgers career. She also served as the president of SAAC, the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. The athletes chosen for the Big Ten Conference Sportsmanship Award have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior, in addition to demonstrating good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
"There is no more deserving of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award than Simrin Dhillon," Civico said. "She consistently conducts herself with character and integrity, both on and off the field. She puts her team and her university first and serves as a tremendous example to the field hockey team as well as the entire Rutgers Athletics community"
The Scarlet Knights posted a 9-9 campaign in 2017. The squad set program records by notching Big Ten Conference wins and three ranked wins (No. 12 Stanford, No. 19 Iowa, and No. 23 Old Dominion). The victory over Stanford was the highest ranked win in program history. The team has been ranked in the NFHCA Coaches Poll for eight straight weeks, and currently is No. 20 in the RPI. RU will return 10 starters next season, along with every goal scorer and 98 percent of its point scoring.
