Oct 28 | Field Hockey
COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 10 Rutgers field hockey (13-5) was bested by No. 23 Ohio State (12-7) in the Big Ten Tournament Quarterfinals on Sunday afternoon. On a windy and rainy afternoon, the Buckeyes scored the game's only goal in double-overtime, advancing on a 1-0 win.
Gianna Glatz had 11 saves for the visitors. Ohio State led 20-6 in shots and 13-2 in penalty corners.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Ohio State pressured throughout the first half with five penalty corners, but Rutgers defense held strong. Gianna Glatz had a key diving save to keep Ohio State off the board. Glatz made five saves in the opening 30 minutes to keep the game scoreless.
Rutgers had their best opportunity of the opening half off a penalty corner with two minutes remaining. A hard strike by Daphne Groothuis was saved, and the game went scoreless into halftime.
Early in the second half, freshman Abby Regn came up with a big play, notching her third defensive save of the year to keep the game scoreless.
RU had a good chance with 17 minutes remaining in the second half. A long pass was redirected on cage by Nikki Profita, but the shot was turned aside. Late in regulation, the Scarlet Knights couldn't convert a corner attempt and the game went into extra time.
In the first overtime, the best chance came on a hard shot from Linde van Schaik, but OSU goalkeeper Aaliyah Hernandez kicked it aside.
In the second overtime, Glatz continued to stymie the Buckeyes, making three saves on a pair of penalty corners. However, in the 89th minute of action, OSU finally broke through. Kelsey Nolan made a run to the right side, then passed across the end line, where it was knocked in by Esther Clotet.
QUOTABLE
"We are obviously very disappointed with the result today. It is not what we wanted or expected. I thought Ohio State was a threat offensively, but our defensive unit played very well and once again Gianna Glatz was excellent in goal. We just did not create enough offensive opportunities. I really hope our season isn't over because our team has worked really hard all season and I'd love for them to represent Rutgers in the NCAA Tournament."
