Men’s Lacrosse to Host Tri-Scrimmage Saturday
Oct 09 | Men's Lacrosse
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers men's lacrosse will host a fall tri-scrimmage this weekend, welcoming UMass and Navy on Saturday at the Marco Battaglia Practice Complex. The Scarlet Knights will first face UMass at 10 am, then match up against Navy at 2 p.m. In between, the Minutemen and Midshipmen will play at noon.
Lacrosse Sports Network will provide video coverage of the event as part of a 'Fall Whip-around Show' from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. LSN will have a presence at four concurrent fall events taking place that day, and the studio hosts will alternate between game sites to provide coverage and analysis.
In culmination with the scrimmage, Rutgers is doing its annual fundraiser for the Vs. Cancer foundation in partnership with the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. The team is raising money to fight pediatric cancer. Donations to the team's fundraiser can be made here. The Scarlet Knights have joined forces with UMass each fall to help combat childhood cancer and raise money for cancer research efforts. The team is also very active throughout the year to support this cause, visiting patients locally at St. Peter's Hospital and Robert Wood Johnson Hospital. Vs. Cancer ensures that half of every dollar raised goes to a local childhood cancer hospital in our community, and the other half funds research at the national level.
The scrimmage will be free and open to the public. All fans should park in the Yellow Lot via Campus Road.
Rutgers is coming off a 9-6 campaign in 2016. The Scarlet Knights return six starters from last season in attackmen Kieran Mullins and Tommy Coyne, midfielders Casey Rose and Ryan Gallagher, defenseman Garrett Bullett and goalkeeper Max Edelmann. RU also brings back long-stick midfielders Kyle Pless and Garrett Michaeli, in addition to Mark Christiano at short-stick defensive midfielder. Last season, Rutgers earned its second Big Ten Tournament bid and its third postseason bid in the past five seasons. The team has posted a 30-15 record over the past three seasons.
UMass went 12-5 in 2018. The team won the CAA Championship to advance to the NCAA Tournament, where they fell in the first round to eventual national champion Yale.
Navy was 9-5 last season. The team last made the NCAA Tournament in 2016.
The tri-scrimmage this weekend kicks off a packed two-week stretch for the men's lacrosse program. The following weekend will be Alumni Weekend, with alumni welcomed back for a celebration that included the Hall of Fame Dinner on Friday, October 19, where John Howland will be inducted into the Rutgers Athletics Hall of Fame. Saturday is the Homecoming football game, with the Hall of Fame honorees recognized at halftime. On Sunday, the team will host its annual Alumni Game.
