PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers men's lacrosse has announced the hire of Eric Seremet as an assistant coach. Formerly the head coach of Air Force for nine seasons, Seremet will serve as the team's offensive coordinator.
"It is a great pleasure to welcome Coach Seremet to the Rutgers lacrosse family today," head coach Brian Brecht said. "I am very excited to have Eric join us here "On the Banks" as he has been very successful and has the experience in developing players and teaching the game at the highest level. I have known Eric for over 20 years and have been very impressed with his abilities to successfully lead, teach and communicate as he most recently was able to build Air Force into a program that won conference championships and earned multiple bids to the NCAA Tournament. Knowing Eric to be a person of outstanding character, teacher of fundamentals, and a great game day planner and technician, our current and future players will grow both on and off the field with his addition to the coaching staff. I am very excited to have Eric and his family join us and look forward to having him meet our current and incoming student-athletes as we start the new school year and prepare for the 2019 season."
Seremet was on the Air Force coaching staff for 15 years, spending nine seasons as the head coach from 2009 to 2017. In that time as head coach, his record was 73-62. He was named the USILA Division I Coach of the Year in 2014 and the 2016 Southern Conference Coach of the Year. Under his leadership, the Falcons won three conference championships and made three trips to the NCAA Tournament. Seremet is also credited with guiding four Falcons (five times) to All-America status.
"I am quite honored to join the Rutgers family and begin a new chapter." Seremet said. "I am grateful for Mr. Hobbs, Mr. Perrier and Coach Brecht for having the confidence in me and welcoming my girls and I to Rutgers. From the minute I stepped on campus I felt the energy of a growing campus and a program anxious to take the next step. Coach Brecht is the hardest working coach in the sport and it will be great to work side-by-side with him and the rest of his staff. It is an exciting time to be a part of Rutgers lacrosse and I look forward to working with these motivated student-athletes in the best lacrosse conference in the country."
Seremet led the Falcons to double-digit victories three times in a four-year span. In 2017, he piloted Air Force to a 12-6 record. That campaign began with an upset victory over No. 10 Duke in the season opener and concluded with a SoCon Championship and NCAA Tournament bid for the third time in four years.
In 2016, Seremet led Air Force to the program's longest ever winning streak (15 games) and the program's highest ever national ranking (No. 8). That season the program finished 15-3, including an unbeaten 7-0 record in conference action.
Seremet earned national Coach of the Year honors in 2014 as he led the program to 11 wins, their highest win total since 1988. The team shared the regular season conference title, then went on to win the ECAC Tournament to earn the program's first NCAA bid in 26 years. With a victory over Richmond in the NCAA play-in game, the squad captured its first NCAA tournament win in program history.
Seremet coached four Major League Lacrosse draftees at Air Force, the first ever in program history. In 2014, Erik Smith (Boston Cannons) and Mike Crampton (Colorado Mammoth) were selected, while in 2016 Christopher Allen (Charlotte Hounds) and Alex Warden (Denver Outlaws) were picked.
Prior to being named the head coach, Seremet was an assistant coach at Air Force from 2002-2008. In that role, worked primarily with the offense, also assisting with recruiting and scouting.
Seremet, a native of Camillus, New York, and 1988 graduate of West Genesee High School, also spent a year as an assistant coach at Cornell University. There he helped the Big Red maintain a top-20 ranking throughout the 2001 season. Prior to his stint at Cornell, Seremet was the top assistant for four years at Stony Brook. While at Stony Brook, Seremet was involved in all aspects of the program, coaching both ends of the field. In 1998, he coached the top goaltender in Division I in save percentage, while the defense ranked third in goals against. Seremet also served as a graduate assistant coach at Dartmouth College during the 1993 season.
Seremet attended the University of North Carolina, where he was a four-year letterwinner for the lacrosse team. During his career, the Tar Heels won four ACC titles and advanced to the NCAA Final Four each season. Seremet also played on North Carolina's 1991 national championship team, which finished the season with a perfect 16-0 record. He graduated from North Carolina in 1992 with a bachelor's degree in industrial relations.
In addition to his collegiate experience as both a player and a coach, Seremet also brings eight years of professional playing experience to the table. Seremet began his professional career in 1993 with the Boston Blazers of the Major Indoor Lacrosse League. He competed in the National Lacrosse League for seven seasons, playing for the New York Saints from 1995-1999, earning team MVP honors in 1996. Seremet was also a member of the Syracuse Smash from 1999-2000 and the Colorado Mammoth in 2003.
