Rutgers Represented at World Lacrosse Championships
Jul 06 | Men's Lacrosse
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers will be well represented in the 2018 World Lacrosse Championships, which will be held July 12-21 in Netanya, Israel. Rutgers has two former student-athletes competing in the event, as Christian Scarpello will play for Team England and Scott Bieda will play for Team Puerto Rico. There will also be two Rutgers alumns coaching in the games, as John Danowski will be the head coach for Team USA and Kris Alleyne will serve as an assistant coach for Team Puerto Rico.
Scarpello recently concluded his Scarlet Knights playing career after graduating following the 2018 season. The Madison, N.J. native played in 60 games, totaling 13 goals and 24 assists for 37 points. The short-stick defensive midfielder also collected 121 ground balls and caused 42 turnovers. Scarpello, who spent two seasons playing alongside his older brother Collin at RU, became eligible for a spot on Team England due to his family's English lineage on his father's side of the family.

Bieda had a dynamic career 'On the Banks' from 2013-2016. The native of Bridgewater, N.J. finished his career 6th in Rutgers history in assists (103) and points (193). In 2016, he was a Third Team All-American and Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year and unanimous First Team All-Big Ten selection after scoring 28 goals and adding 38 assist for 66 points. A three-time all-conference selection, Bieda currently plays in the MLL for the Boston Cannons and is an assistant lacrosse coach at Lafayette College.

A former teammate of Bieda's will also serve as one of his coaches, as Kris Alleyne will be an assistant coach for Team Puerto Rico. Alleyne also was a Scarlet Knight from 2013-2016, where the goalkeeper made 545 saves, 5th all-time in Rutgers history. The BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year and First Team All-Conference selection in 2013 finished his career at the North vs. South All-Star Game alongside Bieda, who he will now coach in the upcoming Championship.

Danowski graduated from Rutgers in 1976. A four-year letterman on attack and three-time recipient of the Sasser Trophy, he helped lead the Scarlet Knights to NCAA Tournament appearances in 1973 and 1974. In his Scarlet Knights career, he posted 120 assists (second all-time at RU) and 177 points (10th all-time at RU). A team captain in 1976, he also set the program's single-season assist record with 54 in 1973 and the single game points record with 14 versus Penn State in 1974. The Morris Touchstone Award winner for Coach of the Year in 1993, Danowski was inducted into the Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2000. He is currently the head coach of Duke University.
