Oct 03 | Men's Lacrosse
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Rutgers men's lacrosse program announced its 2019 individual award winners this past weekend at the team's annual banquet. The banquet was held in conjunction with the team's annual Alumni Game and honored last season's senior class.
The winner of the team's prestigious William Miller Trophy, awarded to the team member who, by his own example, has constituted an inspiration to his teammates and made the greatest contribution to the team in the season's play, was Max Edelmann. The goalkeeper was named a Third Team All-American, First Team All-Big Ten and was the Big Ten Co-Specialist of the Year. At the conclusion of the regular season, he led the nation in saves. In the classroom, he was a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection, Big Ten Distinguished Scholar, and Scholar All-American.
The Knight Cup is awarded to the player who has played the game of lacrosse to the best of his ability, who has, by example, inspired or led by his teammates both on and off the field and who, above all, has consistently demonstrated the qualities of unselfishness and loyalty to his team and Rutgers University. This year's recipient was Kyle Pless, a team captain, Honorable Mention All-American and Second Team All-Big Ten selection. Starting all 15 games, he led the team in caused turnovers (24) and was second with 35 ground balls.
The team's assist leader is the winner of The Alfred Sasser Trophy. This year, that honor went to Kieran Mullins, an Honorable Mention All-American and First Team All-Big Ten selection who led the team with 37 assists, the eighth most in program history for a single season.
The Robert Collett Trophy is awarded to the member of the Rutgers varsity lacrosse team, who displays the best mental and physical spirit. This year, the accolade went to Adam Charalambides. A team captain as a redshirt sophomore, he was a First Team All-Big Ten selection after pacing the squad with 47 goals and 61 points. His goal total was the third most ever in program history in a single season, while his 18 goals in Big Ten games led the conference.
The Al Twitchell Award is awarded to the freshman seen as the most valuable to the team. The winner was David Sprock, a midfielder out of Dallas, Texas, who started 13 of the 15 games and finished with 10 goals, three assists and five ground balls.
The Frederick Fitch Trophy is bestowed up the letterwinner who, through personal effort to develop his lacrosse ability, has shown the greatest improvement during the season. This year, the honor went to Ryan Gallagher. A starter in 14 games, he was second on the team with 20 assists and third with 44 points. That represented a 25-point jump from his freshman season, when he posted six goals and 13 assists. Gallagher was also named to the 2019 Big Ten All-Tournament Team.
The Doc Peterson Award is awarded to the team member who displays a balance of both academics and athletics and has put the success of the program and his teammates ahead of himself. This award represents the individual who was the unsung hero of the season in all aspects. This year's award winner was Garrett Bullett. A redshirt junior defenseman, Bullett started all 15 games on the team's backline, and was continually tasked with shutting down the opponent's best attackman. He had 34 ground balls, 11 caused turnovers, and was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week following the win over rival Princeton.
