PISCATAWAY, N.J. - No. 20 Rutgers men's lacrosse will host Hofstra this Saturday for the team's final non-conference matchup of the season. The game will begin with the first faceoff at 1 p.m. The contest will be live streamed by BTN Plus with Lou Brogno (play-by-play) and Rick Mercurio (color commentary) on the call.
ABOUT RUTGERS: The Scarlet Knights are 4-4 on the year. The team will look to rebound from a pair of ranked losses last week, falling to No. 16 Lehigh and at No. 13 Syracuse. On Tuesday night against the Mountain Hawks, sophomore
Ryan Gallagher scored a career-high four goals. In three games since moving from midfield to join the attack line, he has scored six goals and added three assists. On Saturday at the Carrier Dome, Rutgers' attack was led by the duo of
Adam Charalambides and
Kieran Mullins. Charalambides tied his career high with six goals and added two assists for a new career-high of eight points. The redshirt sophomore has scored multiple goals in seven games this year, with three games of at least four goals. Mullins fed scorers with regularity, registering a career-best six assists. Mullins has recorded at least three points in every game this season. His next assist will be the 50th of his career and tie his previous high for assists in a season.
In goal,
Max Edelmann continued to backstop the Scarlet Knights with high save totals. His 19 saves against Syracuse established a new career-high for the fourth time in six games. Edelmann averages 15.67 saves per game, which leads the Big Ten and is third best in the nation.
As a team, RU ranks among the top-10 in the nation in man-down defense (second, .850), saves per game (sixth, 14.63), turnovers (eighth, 14.63) and clearing percentage (10th, .878).
ABOUT HOFSTRA: Hofstra enters the matchup at 3-5 overall. After opening the season with wins over Lehigh (4-3) and Utah (14-10), the Pride have lost five out of six, with a win last Tuesday over St. John's (9-7). Offensively the team is led by head coach Seth Tierney's son, Ryan Tierney. The two-time All-CAA selection leads the team with 19 goals, six assists and 25 points. Following him is seven players between six and nine points. On faceoffs is Brian Herber, who has won 94-of-172 faceoffs (54.6%). In goal, first-year starter Robert Casey saved 51.8 % of shots with a 9.97 goals-against-average. Hofstra graduated seven starters from last year's 6-8 team, yet returned its top three leading scorers. Hofstra assistant coach John Gorman joined their staff this summer following two years coordinating the Rutgers' defense.
ABOUT THE SERIES: Rutgers and Hofstra have faced each other 30 times dating back to 1954, with each team winning 15 times. This is the first matchup between the two schools since 1999, with Rutgers looking for their first win in the series since 1995.
