EAST BRUNSWICK, N.J. – Rutgers tennis added two wins to its record after hosting a doubleheader on Friday at the East Brunswick Racquet Club. The Scarlet Knights posted a 4-1 victory over NJIT and a 7-0 sweep over Binghamton.
"I'm very pleased with how the team competed today," stated Head Coach Hilary Ritchie. "We were mentally tough and consistent when it got close. Everyone fought until the end."
The Scarlet Knights took an early lead over the Highlanders by clinching the doubles point. The Rutgers sophomore duos of Kristiana Zahare and Sydney Jones defeated Joleta Budiman and Amira Badawi 6-2 at spot No. 1, while Tess Fisher and Sydney Kaplan (No. 2) powered past Aya El Sayed and Mouna Bouzgarrou 6-1.
During singles play, Kaplan (No. 4) claimed the first point over Adara Omar 6-1, 6-0. At No. 1, Fisher added another point to the board for Rutgers with 6-2, 6-4 victories over Aya El Sayed. Junior Maya Jacobs clinched the match for the Scarlet Knights in the No. 2 spot over Amira Badawi 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.
In just 20 minutes, Rutgers clinched the doubles point for the second time of the day. Fisher and Kaplan (No. 2) swept Regina Furer and Jamie Lau 6-0. Moments later Jacobs and senior Kat Muzik claimed a 6-1 victory over Ashley Granieri and Julie Gumieniak for the doubles point.
Kaplan remained dominant in singles play against the Bearcats winning in straight sets over Jamie Lau in the No. 4 spot. Fisher then joined Kaplan with another tick in the win column over Samara Eisenberg (No. 1) 6-1, 6-2. Following close behind was Muzik (No. 5) 6-0, 6-4 over Ashley Granieri.
Keeping fans on their toes, Isabelle Da Silva (No. 6) took Lara Kaplan into a 10-point tie breaker and captured her first victory of the season 4-6, 6-0, 10-1. Jones bested Regina Furer 3-6, 6-2, 10-8 in the No. 3 spot. Jacobs (No. 2) then sealed the sweep for the Scarlet Knights 6-2, 6-7 (6-8), 10-7 over Michelle Eisenberg.
"Having a doubleheader, we've never had that before and it's definitely tough having to play a match then play another one, but I think we came out aggressive and played how we've been practicing," said Sydney Kaplan. "We were successful in the first match and then came out just as aggressive in the second match and kept it up. We cheered each other on and we came out successful again."
Rutgers will return to the East Brunswick Racquet Club on Friday, February 14 for their Big Ten opener at 12:30 p.m. against the Maryland Terrapins.
