Rutgers product begins 2020 season tonight with Texas Rangers
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Former Rutgers baseball standout Todd Frazier begins his 10th MLB season tonight as a member of the Texas Rangers. The Rangers are opening a new ballpark, Globe Life Field, versus the Colorado Rockies.
The New Jersey native is expected to serve as the Rangers' first baseman. Playing the last two years with the New York Mets, he blasted 21 homers in 2019 to make it eight consecutive seasons with 18 or more, being one of eight players to accomplish the feat. Owning 214 career long balls, he previously saw action with the New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox after making his debut with the Cincinnati Reds in 2011.
A two-time All-Star, Frazier won the 2015 Home Run Derby. He has played in 1,186 MLB games with 1,019 hits, 624 RBIs and 585 runs with a .770 OPS.
One of the most accomplished players in Rutgers history, Frazier ranks first in the RU record book with 42 career home runs and 210 runs during his three seasons (2005-07) in Piscataway. He hit .377 with 93 hits, 24 doubles, 22 home runs, 65 RBIs, 62 walks and 25 stolen bases in a memorable All-America 2007 season that saw the Scarlet Knights win the Big East regular season and tournament. Frazier batted .520 (13-for-25) with three homers and seven RBIs in the tournament held in Brooklyn to help lead Rutgers to an NCAA Regional berth. He was selected by Cincinnati as the 34th overall selection in 2007 and was inducted into the Rutgers Athletics Hall of Fame last fall.
In addition, both Patrick Kivlehan (Toronto Blue Jays) and Brian O'Grady (Tampa Bay Rays) start the season on their respective clubs' 60-man roster, making them eligible for a call up to the big leagues.
