Baseball Postpones Alumni Game & Gardner Number Retirement Ceremony
Sep 14 | Baseball
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers baseball has postponed its annual alumni game and the Glen Gardner number retirement ceremony. The events were originally scheduled for the weekend of Oct. 11 at Bainton Field.
"Due to the ongoing pandemic, we are sad to be unable to host these important events in the interest of health and safety for all," head coach Steve Owens said. "We will stay positive and look forward to staging both the alumni game and Glen's jersey retirement ceremony in the near future. At that time, we will be able to gather together as a Rutgers baseball family, interact and socialize in a normal fashion, and celebrate #49's longtime accomplishments and impact on the program!"
"It certainly is an honor to have my number retired alongside Fred Hill and Jeff Torborg," Gardner said. "However, it doesn't make sense to have the ceremony this fall because I want everyone to be there to enjoy it. This is not about me, it's about all the great players, coaches and staff I was fortunate to work with over the years. We have to get through this pandemic and then there will be time, hopefully sooner than later."
The retirement of Gardner's No. 49 was first announced at the Leadoff Banquet in January.
