Jimmy Ryan Named Men’s Lacrosse Assistant Coach
Sep 28 | Men's Lacrosse
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers men's lacrosse has announced the promotion of Jimmy Ryan into a full-time assistant coach role as the team's new defensive coordinator. Ryan previously spent the past three seasons on the Scarlet Knights' staff as the team's Volunteer Assistant Coach and Director of Operations.
"I am very proud to announce Jimmy Ryan as our new defensive coordinator," head coach Brian Brecht said. "Coach Ryan has been involved with every aspect of our program for the past three years and I am excited to elevate him to our full time position. It has been extremely obvious over the years how passionate Coach Ryan is and how much he cares about Rutgers Lacrosse and our student-athletes. He has gone above, and well beyond, his role over the years to assist our players and Rutgers lacrosse in every way he could. It was a very easy decision to promote him after he had done such a great job during his three-year interview. Since day one when he arrived "On the Banks" back in September of 2017, he has jumped in with both feet to assist in any way he could. He has recently really rolled up his sleeves in a full time capacity and dove head first into the current recruiting process and planning for the start of our fall practices and workouts with our current team. I'm excited to continue working with Coach Ryan in his new position, and I know he is fired up to help our players both on and off the field develop to play to their highest level and have success in the classroom."
Ryan will enter his fourth season as a member of the Scarlet Knights staff. He joined the program in September of 2017. With Ryan on the staff, the Scarlet Knights have won 18 games, which includes five ranked wins and four Big Ten conference victories, highlighted by ranked wins over No. 4 Ohio State, No. 11 Penn State and No. 12 Syracuse.
Ryan has previously worked with the Scarlet Knights' goalkeepers and specialists. In 2019, Ryan mentored goalkeeper Max Edelmann, who was named a Third Team All-American (USILA), Honorable Mention All-American (Media), Big Ten Co-Specialist of the Year, First Team All-Big Ten and All-ECAC. With Ryan's guidance, he led the nation in saves per game.
"I am extremely grateful for Coach Brecht and Senior Athletic Associate Director Matt Colagiovanni putting their trust in me to assume this new role as assistant coach at Rutgers University," Ryan said. "I have been fortunate enough to call Rutgers University and New Jersey my home for the last 3 years, and I would not want to be anywhere else. I would like to thank my college coaches and all the coaches that I have worked for who took chances on me this far in my career. I would not be in this position without any of them. I would also like to thank all the people in the Rutgers Athletic Department, Rutgers Academic Services and all of the Rutgers lacrosse alumni who I have been fortunate enough to get to know since 2017. Their love for this program, this University, and the men in our locker room is unmatched. It inspires us each day to constantly improve and be better than the day before. I love everything about this program that Brian Brecht has built here, and I cannot wait for us to get going."
Ryan joined the program after previously serving as an assistant coach at Western New England University. Ryan served as the team's offensive coordinator as they scored 184 goals in 18 games, recording a 7-1 record in conference. Ryan also spent a year as an assistant coach at Williams College, where he served as goalie coach while working with both the offense and defense and was the team's video coordinator.
The Bethesda, Maryland native was a four-year letterwinner for the Ithaca College men's lacrosse program as a long-stick midfielder, serving as a team captain as a senior. After earning All-Empire 8 honors as a junior in 2014, he was named to the first team as a senior in 2015 in addition to being selected to play in the 74th Annual USILA North-South Game.
Ryan earned his bachelor's degree from Ithaca College in 2015, majoring in Science of Business Administration in the Ithaca College Business School.
