Men’s Lacrosse Announces Four Captains For 2022-23 Season

David Sprock, Ross Scott, Ethan Rall and Bobby Russo chosen as captains

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers men's lacrosse today unveiled the four student-athletes that were voted captain for the upcoming 2022-23 season. The Scarlet Knights will have the leadership of captains David Sprock, Ross Scott, Ethan Rall and Bobby Russo. Each player is a captain for the first time this season, following the graduation of last season's captains Ryan Gallagher and Colin Kirst.

Sprock enters his fifth season at RU in 2023. A starting midfielder in 32 of 34 career games played from 2019 through 2021, the Dallas, Texas native missed all of last season with an injury that he suffered during a preseason scrimmage. An Honorable Mention All-American in 2021, Sprock posted 17 goals and 10 assists that season, and for his career has 39 goals and 18 assists for 57 points in 34 games. Off the field, the Dallas, Texas native has been recognized as a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and earned Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and Chi Alpha Sigma recognition.

Russo also returns for a fifth season 'On the Banks' using extra COVID eligibility. The Bridgewater, N.J. native has played in 44 career games for his home state school, starting all 32 games over the past two seasons at close defense, with career-highs last season in ground balls (42) and caused turnovers (12). In his career, Russo has collected 76 ground balls and caused 27 turnovers, with three goals and six assists. Russo was the recipient of the 2022 Big Ten Sportsmanship Award and was a two-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar, three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and a member of Chi Alpha Sigma.

Rall is the third of the group to enter year five at Rutgers this season. One of the best players in the nation at his position, Rall was a First Team All-American last season at long-stick midfield via USA Lacrosse Magazine. He was also named ECAC Defensive Player of the Year, Scholar All-American and First Team All-Big Ten. Also an All-American in 2021, Rall has played in 49 career games, collecting 104 ground balls, 64 caused turnovers, four goals and five assists. Last season, the Islip, N.Y. native led the Big Ten with a program record 31 caused turnovers. He is a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and Chi Alpha Sigma selection.

Scott, a fourth-year senior, posted an elite campaign last season. After starting just five of 19 games as an underclassman, the West Linn, Ore. native had a breakthrough junior campaign. Scott scored 50 Goals, tied for most in a single-season in RU program history with Tom Sweeney (1978), and added 25 assists for 75 points total, the second most in a single-season in RU program history. A Third Team All-American by the USILA, Scott, a Second Team All-Big Ten performer, excelled in the postseason as a member of the NCAA Tournament All-Tournament Team and Big Ten All-Tournament Team. The All-ECAC selection scored eight goals in the NCAA Tournament win over Harvard, the second most goals in a single NCAA Tournament game in history. Scott was recently revealed as No. 15 on Inside Lacrosse's Top 50 Preseason Players list, while Rall was ranked as No. 39 on the list.

The quartet is set to lead RU as the program seeks to build off of a historic 2022 campaign. Last season, RU made the Final Four for the first time in program history. RU smashed the previous program record for wins, grabbing 15 victories. The team won back-to-back NCAA Tournament games for the first time, downing No. 14 Harvard and No. 3 Penn to advance to the Final Four for the first time. RU set a record with six ranked wins this season, included matching the highest ranked win in program history with the win over No. 3 Penn and three top-10 wins for the second consecutive season.

The upcoming season will begin this February. The full season schedule and ticket information will be announced in the coming weeks.
