No. 8 Field Hockey Victorious In Overtime, 1-0, over No. 15 UConn

Guillermina Causarano provides winning tally off assist from Iris Langejans

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – No. 8 Rutgers field hockey claimed its first ranked win of the season, taking down No. 15 UConn, 1-0, in overtime. Guillermina Causarano provided the game-winning goal for RU, finishing off a fed from Iris Langejans to start a dogpile and send RU home as victors.

The meeting with the No. 15 Huskies marked the third ranked team in four games for RU, who currently project to open the season against ranked teams in seven of 10 games to open the season, with 11 of their opponents ranked in the preseason poll.

RU goalkeeper Sophia Howard made six saves to earn her second straight shutout. Howard came up huge with a key play at the end of regulation, saving a clean Huskies attempt at the goal to preserve the scoreless tie and send the game into an extra session.

Seven minutes into the first overtime period, RU struck for the winning goal. Iris Langejans had possession along the back post and slid a pass across to the front of the cage. Guillermina Causarano was stationed at the doorstep, where she dove and hammered the ball home to provide the winning tally.

The game was very even throughout the contest. RU held a slight advantage in shots (11-9) and corners (3-2). In the overtime session, RU had a 4-0 margin in shots.
After a 2-0 week, following Wednesday's 2-0 win over La Salle, RU is back in action next week against a pair of New Jersey foes. The Scarlet Knights travel to face Monmouth on Friday and then host Princeton on Sunday.

Postgame Notes
  • The victory over UConn was just Rutgers' fourth win all-time over the Huskies in 35 lifetime meetings. RU has now won two straight matchups after claiming a double overtime win in Storrs last season.
  • RU claimed its first ranked win of the year over No. 15 UConn after winning a program record 13 games over ranked foes last season.
    • The win was the program's 33 ranked win all-time, all of them coming under head coach Meredith Civico, and 30 of them coming since the start of the 2017 season.
  • Causarano's goal was her first of the season, and Langejans' assist was her first this year.
