Showdown against pair of NJ schools this Friday (away) and Sunday (home)
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – No. 15 Rutgers field hockey is back in action this week with a pair of ranked meetings against fellow New Jersey schools. The Scarlet Knights will play their first road contest of the season on Friday, traveling south just 29 miles to take on No. 25 Monmouth at 3 p.m. RU then returns host No. 17 Princeton on Sunday at noon.
Both games will be available to live stream, with Friday on Flo Sports, and Sunday back on B1G+. At Sunday's contest at Bauer Field, RU will recognize Military Appreciation Day, which includes a Red, White and Blue Block R giveaway.
About Rutgers
The Scarlet Knights are No. 15 in the NFHCA's first in-season poll of the season this week. With this week's opponent Monmouth entering the poll, that now means RU will face 13 teams this season that are ranked in this week's poll, including eight of this week's top-10.
Rutgers played the rare Wednesday-Friday week ahead of Labor Day weekend, giving the team a full week break between games for the only time this season. RU earned a pair of wins on the week, evening the Scarlet Knights' record at 2-2 on the young season.
On Wednesday, the Scarlet Knights earned a 2-0 shutout win over La Salle. The home team received goals from Lucy Bannatyne and Indy van Ek in the contest, with Sophia Howard securing the shutout in goal.
On Friday, Rutgers battled against No. 15 UConn, and the game went into overtime deadlocked at 0-0. Finally, the Scarlet Knights broke through with a goal from Guillermina Causarano, finishing off an assist from Iris Langejans. Howard made six saves to earn her second straight shutout, including a crucial stop off a breakaway chance in the final minute of regulation.
Howard has averaged five saves per game, which is the best mark in the Big Ten. She also holds a 1.33 goals-against-average and .769 save percentage. RU has gotten goals from Causarano, van Ek, Bannatyne and Rachel Houston on the season.
About Monmouth
The Hawks enter the game with a 2-1 record, with a loss in the meeting against mutual opponent UConn and wins over Fairfield and Delaware. The Hawks are led offensively by Aylin Aufenacker (two goals, three assists) and Annick van Lange (three goals). In goal, freshman Phileine Hazen has a 1.65 goals-against-average and .792 save percentage. Aufenacker was named the CAA Player of the Week and national Offensive Player of the Week after scoring the OT winner over Delaware to give the Hawks their first ever conference win as members of the CAA. Hazen, the CAA Rookie of the Week after week one, is fourth nationally with 8.5 saves per game.
Last season, RU defeated then-No. 20 Monmouth by a 3-2 final margin. Among returners, Guillermina Causarano scored her first career goal in the game, while Sophia Howard played the second half between the pipes and had two saves. The Scarlet Knights hold a 6-4 advantage in the all-time series and have won three straight meetings.
About Princeton
Princeton enters the weekend at 0-2, with a home contest on Friday against Syracuse awaiting them prior to Sunday's matchup at Bauer. The Tigers lost to two teams currently ranked in this week's top-five in No. 2 UNC (4-3) and No. 5 Louisville (2-1), and will make it three straight top-10 teams played on Friday as they face No. 7 Syracuse. The Tigers had four different goal scorers in those two games, with Beth Yeager leading the team with three points. In goal, Robyn Thompson has a 3.22 goals-against-average and .455 save percentage.
Last season, RU defeated then-No. 17 Princeton 3-1 on the road. Rutgers has now won three straight games over Princeton, all three times earning a ranked win. The Tigers lead the all-time series 19-6-1, a series that dates back to 1974 as RU played at Princeton in just the second ever field hockey game in program history.
Both games will be available to live stream, with Friday on Flo Sports, and Sunday back on B1G+. At Sunday's contest at Bauer Field, RU will recognize Military Appreciation Day, which includes a Red, White and Blue Block R giveaway.
