PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Two student-athletes from Rutgers men's lacrosse were named All-Americans by the media voting compiled by Inside Lacrosse. Ethan Rall was named to the Second Team while Shane Knobloch was placed on the Third Team.
Rall is an All-American for the third straight season. The long-stick midfielder caused 21 turnovers and collecting 49 ground balls. A Second Team All-Big Ten selection, Rall finished his 62-game Rutgers career with 85 caused turnovers, setting a new program record. The Islip, N.Y. native was a two-time Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week, finishing second in the league in caused turnovers per game and sixth in the Big Ten in ground balls per game (second among non-faceoff specialists).
Knobloch earns All-American accolades for the third time in his three seasons "On the Banks". The Second Team All-Big Ten selection scored 21 goals and added 17 assists for 38 points, sharing the team-high in assists and was second on the team in points. The Moorestown, N.J. native, had five multi-goal games including four hat tricks and had three games of at least five points, highlighted by a seven-point day in a win over No.5 Loyola. The midfielder scored the game-winning goal in overtime in the team's win over eventual Big Ten Tournament champion Michigan.
Rutgers finished its season with an 8-6 record. The Scarlet Knights were nationally ranked for the entire season, peaking at No. 6, and finished at No. 15 in the RPI. RU claimed four wins over NCAA Tournament teams, three wins over teams in the top-15 of the selection RPI, and their three ranked wins during the year including a win over then-No. 5 Loyola.
This is the second All-American team to be released, following the USA Lacrosse Magazine team (which saw Ethan Rall on the First Team, Shane Knobloch on the Third Team and Noah Daniels as an Honorable Mention). The Coaches' All-American teams from the USILA, will be released at a later date this month.
Inside Lacrosse's Media All-America list was voted on by a dozen media members who vote in the weekly Media Poll. Each voter selected up to four teams of players featuring three attackmen, three midfielders, a face-off specialist, two shortstick d-middies, an LSM, three defenders and a goalie. Votes were tabulated and sorted into three teams, with remaining players who received a significant share of votes added to the honorable mention list. Voting was completed after the conference tournaments and before the NCAA First Round.
