SPRINGFIELD, Va. - Five Rutgers men's lacrosse made an impact playing at the pro level during the Premier Lacrosse League's February Championship Series. Colin Kirst and
Ethan Rall helped the Cannons to a victory, while Christian Scarpello, Jules Heningburg and Ronan Jacoby all made their presence felt for their squads.
Kirst and Rall helped the Cannons to a win over Scarpello's Waterdogs during a nationally televised matinee overtime contest on President's Day. Kirst helped backstop the Cannons to the victory with a number of key saves, making one on the Waterdogs final possesion of regulation and another in overtime to extend the contest. In a losing effort, Scarpello stepped up big following an early injury to Michael Sowers, as the defensive midfielder made a larger impact on the offensive end with a goal and four assists.
"This week has been really special being together as a team and to end it like this is really special," Colin Kirst said on ESPN2 following the win," It means a lot. I love this group and hope we can keep it going."
In the offensively focused event, Kirst made a difference between the pipes, with a 46.8% that was second among all goalies and posting 52 saves.
"Colin Kirst, he's the best goalie in the world and he's playing unbelievably," teammate Asher Nolting told the media following the semifinals. "He bailed us out so many times on defense."
"He was the MVP," Cannons coach Brian Holman echoed postgame. "We signed him to a three-year contract so we're going to ride with him for a long time."
Playing with a shortstick in the event, former All-American long-stick midfielder Ethan Rall took faceoffs for the Cannons. He also had four caused turnovers and eight ground balls.
Scarpello also had four caused turnovers, tying Rall for second among participants in the Championship series. He had six ground balls in addition to his offensive impact in the final
Ronan Jacoby made his PLL debut in the event and was an offensive threat for the Archers. Playing in four games, Jacoby was fourth in the event with 12 one-point goals. He also added three two-point goals and two assists for 20 points over the four games.
Jules Heningburg had eight goals in four games for the Redwoods. He added two ground balls and two assists.
