Army Wins 11-9 Inside the Bubble
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The home opener for No. 18 Rutgers men's lacrosse was held Saturday inside the Busch Bubble, with No. 12 Army taking an 11-9 victory in a contest that was a tight battle throughout. The Scarlet Knights held a 7-5 halftime lead and were up 9-8 early in the fourth quarter, but the visitors scored the final three goals of the game to close out the win.
On the day, Rutgers was led by Colin Kurdyla with a hat trick. The junior from Bridgewater, N.J. had his eighth career hat trick and now leads RU with seven goals on the season. Colin Zeller and Greyson Vorgang each had a pair of goals, while Shane Murphy and Kasey Mongillo also tallied on the day. It was Vorgang's first career multi-goal game.
Goalkeeper Cardin Stoller made 10 saves. Army goalkeeper Sean Byrne made 12 saves in a battle between a pair of goalkeepers who were All-Americans last season. John Scarelli was 9-of-21 on faceoffs for RU.
Army had a 42-37 advantage in shots and 31-22 margin in ground balls, forcing 17 RU turnovers compared to making 12 themselves. Both teams placed exactly 21 shots on goal, and combined there were only three failed clears in the game, which was played mostly in the six-on-six offense.
Playing indoors, RU came out hot, taking a 2-0 lead. A high scoring first quarter saw Army answers with two goals, then the teams trading goals, with the scorer knotted at 3-3 after the Black Knights tallied in the final seconds of the first frame.
Army took their first lead of the game five minutes into the second quarter, but RU answered with a three-goal run for a 6-4 lead. The squads then traded goals again, with the score going into the break at 7-5 in favor of the hosts.
In the second half, the Army defense limited the RU attack to just two goals. The Black Knights outscored RU 6-2 after halftime. Despite a 2-0 run for RU to take a 9-8 lead with 13:57 to play, Army finished out with the last three goals and held RU off the scoreboard to preserve the two-goal margin of victory.
The contest between Rutgers and Army was the 89th meeting between the schools, with the Black Knights taking their fourth straight victory in the series. Rutgers returns to action next Saturday, slated for a road game at Stony Brook.
