Colin Kurdyla Has 11 Points, Most for any RU player since 1993
QUEENS, N.Y. – Rutgers men's lacrosse came out firing on all cylinders in a road contest at St. John's, earning a 19-4 victory to improve to 6-2 on the season.
Colin Kurdyla had four goals and seven assists, and new career-high for him in assists and points (11). Kurdyla's 11 points was the most for any RU player since 1993. It tied for the fourth-most points in a single game, and the seven assists was tied for the sixth-most all-time. It was the most assists in a game for a RU player since 1997. Kurdyla surpassed 100 career points in the game.
Haydn Sommer had the first five-goal game for a RU player since 2022, when Ross Scott had his eight-goal outburst in the NCAA Tournament. Sommer had a career-high six points with five goals and an assist.
Colin Kelly added three goals for RU. Evan Large also had two goals. Cardin Stoller saved 67% across the first three quarters, making six stops and allowing just three goals.
The Scarlet Knights had a season-high in goals, their most since scoring 21 against St. John's last season. Rutgers outshot St. John's 57-23 and forced the Red Storm into nine failed clears and 30 turnovers. Rutgers won 18-of-27 faceoffs, led by John Scarelli going 12-of-17.
Rutgers was aggressive from the outset, causing multiple failed cleared in the first two minutes. Colin Kelly got RU on the board first, rifling home a feed from Colin Kurdyla for the first score of the game. Then it was JJ Aiello, returning to game action for the first time since the season opener on January 31. Seeing his first action in six weeks, he made his impact felt early on, bullying his way to the goal and finishing for the 2-0 lead.
Rutgers won the first four faceoffs and took 14 of the first 15 shots in controlling possession early on. Justin Lawler, Haydn Sommer, Kasey Mongillo and Greyson Vorgang all added first quarter goals as RU raced out to a 6-0 lead after the first 14 minutes of the contest with six different goal scorers. Colin Kurdyla assisted on three of the first six goals, tying his career-high in assists in the first quarter alone.
After leading 6-1 after the first quarter, RU outscored St. John's 6-1 in the second quarter as well. Colin Kelly tallied his second goal of the game to put RU up 7-1 after 17 minutes of action, with the Scarlet Knights owning all the momentum, having taken 25 of the first 30 shots, dominating possession. Adrian Nowak answered with his second goal of the day, cutting RU's lead to 7-2. From there, RU ran off the last five goals of the frame, with Colin Kelly and Haydn Sommer finishing off first half hat tricks, and Colin Kurdyla scoring twice as well. Kurdyla had a new career-high in points with seven points in the first half, recording two goals and five assists. After the 12-2 margin in the first half, RU has outscored opponents by a combined 60-44 in the first halves this season.
