Women's Lacrosse Picks Up 17-16 Win at Temple

PHILADELPHIA – Rutgers women's lacrosse (5-2) delivered a 17-16 win over Temple (8-1) on Saturday afternoon at Howarth Field. Down 9-8 at halftime, the Scarlet Knights used an 8-2 third quarter to defeat the previously undefeated Owls, who were ranked No. 19 in this week's USA Lacrosse Division I Women's Top 20.
Sophomore Caroline Ling produced another impressive offensive outing, finishing with a career-high eight goals on 10 shots to pace RU's attack. Classmate Hilary Elsner netted a hat trick, senior captain Ava Chiarella tallied two goals and rookie Kate Theofield recorded another highlight, behind-the-back score. Theofield and senior captain Lily Dixon dished out two assists apiece.
Senior captain Katie Buck enjoyed another monster game in center circle, finishing with a game-high 10 draw controls. Buck and rookie Gabby Mariani each forced two turnovers, while sophomore Maddie Miceli scooped up a team-high four ground balls.
Graduate student goalkeeper Simone Koryszewski earned her fifth win with the Scarlet Knights thanks to four saves in 40 minutes of action. Rookie Ellie Rackie also saved four shots down the stretch.
It was a back-and-forth game all afternoon, with Temple scoring the first goal two minutes in. Rutgers responded with scores from Ling and junior Payton Tini, while Ling's second score off a pass from Dixon made it 3-2 with 4:49 left in the quarter. The Scarlet Knights added two more before the first break, with Chiarella's first making it 5-3 RU after the first 15 minutes of action.
Both teams continued to trade goals, with Ling making it 8-6 at the 6:41 mark in the quarter. However, Temple responded with a 3-0 scoring run to end the half, with Sarah Gowman's goal giving the Owls a 9-8 advantage heading into the locker room.
Rutgers dominated the third quarter, which proved to be the difference in the game. The Scarlet Knights scored three consecutive goals out of halftime, as Elsner netted an unassisted goal to make it 11-9 RU with 11:24 left in the third.
Rutgers closed the third quarter with a 5-1 scoring run in a span of 6:30 minutes.Theofield took a pass from sophomore Delainey Sutley and finished a behind-the-back score to make it 14-10, while back-to-back goals from Elsner and Dixon put the Scarlet Knights up 16-11 heading into the fourth.
Temple made it interesting down the stretch, outscoring RU 5-1 to make it interesting in the fourth quarter. The Owls scored back-to-back goals in the closing minutes, as a score from Sabrina Martin made it just 17-16 Rutgers with 1:16 left to play. However, Buck secured her 10th draw control of the afternoon, and the Scarlet Knights ran out the clock for the win.
