NJCBA All-Star Tilt Ends in 5-5 Tie
Jun 02 | Baseball
PISCATAWAY, NJ – The North squad, trailing 5-3 in the bottom of the ninth, rallied for two runs off RU-Camden closer Dan McKenna to forge a 5-5 tie in today’s New Jersey Collegiate Baseball Association Senior All-Star game, hosted by Rutgers University.
The South squad scored a single run in the first on a wild pitch and after the North tied the game in the bottom of the inning, reclaimed the lead, 2-1, when Rider’s Erinn Pesaresi lined a home run down the left-field line. In the third, the South pushed across two more runs to take a 4-1 lead.
Kean’s Ryan Stanek led off with a single and, with one out, Monmouth’s Lance Koenig walked to put runners at first and second. A deep fly ball to center by TCNJ’s Nick Stine advanced Rider’s Casey Long (fielder’s choice) to third, putting runners at the corners with two away. A walk to Seton Hall’s Josh Schuck loaded the bases for Pesaresi, who doubled down the line in left, past Rutgers’ Steve Normane (Pt. Pleasant, NJ) at third.
The North chipped away with a single run in the fifth on a solo shot by William Paterson’s Dan Suarez, cutting the lead to 4-2.
Trailing 5-3 in the ninth, Suarez led off with a walk and FDU’s Lenny Armenti followed with a single to center. Rutgers-Newark’s Ady Acevado then singled to left off McKenna, plating Suarez to cut the lead to 5-4. Acevado fouled off five pitches before his run-scoring hit. A walk to Montclair State’s Joe Giacomazzio loaded the bases and, after a strikeout, FDU’s Matt Nugent walked to tie the game. McKenna then rebounded to strike out Centenary’s Aaron Feldman and induce a pop up from FDU’s Ryan Knapp to end the game.
The two teams, out of pitchers, mutually agreed to end the game in a tie. The South team was coached by Rider assistant Rick Freeman, while the North was piloted by Rutgers assistant Jay Blackwell. The Rutgers-Camden coaching staff assisted the South, while Felician’s Steve Svenson served as the North’s assistant.
A trio of relievers for the North – Eric Brooks, Anthony Cabrerra, Dan Singer – allowed just one unearned run six innings of action. In addition to Pesaresi, Stanek (Kean) was 2-for-3 to lead the South, while Josh Pineiro (St. Peter’s) was 2-for-2 from the leadoff spot for the North.
