PISCATAWAY, NJ - Junior Aaron Kalb (Middletown, NJ)
allowed just four hits and one run over eight innings and Nick Cerulo (Woodbridge,
NJ) and Jeff Frazier (Toms River, NJ) knocked in two runs apiece to lead Rutgers
to a 7-1 victory over Rider in its home opener at a windy and cold Class of '53
Complex.
Rutgers struck for single runs in the second and third innings to take a 2-0
lead. Rich Canuso (Monroe, NJ) led off the second with a double and scored
on a single to center from Steve Hook (Langhorne, PA). In the third, Cerulo
doubled with one out, stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly from Canuso.
Rutgers broke it open in the fourth with four more runs. Colin Gaynor (Toms
River, NJ) led off with a single and, with one out, David Williams (Franklin,
NJ) and Tim Querns (Cherry Hill, NJ) laced back-to-back singles, plating Gaynor.
With two outs, Cerulo hit a hustling double to center, scoring Williams and
Querns, while Frazier followed with a single, plating Graig Badger (Union,
NJ), who reached on a two-out walk.
Rutgers added another run in the sixth, building a 6-0 lead, when Badger was
hit by a pitch and scored on a double to right from Frazier.
Kalb cruised through the middle innings after allowing a first-inning double
and a second-inning single. He allowed single walks in the third, fourth and
fifth innings but was flawless otherwise, striking out one in the fifth and
two each in the sixth and seventh. He began to tire in the seventh, allowing
a singles to Bryan Wagner and Steve Bruschini before a passed ball with Scott
Rich at the plate allowed Wagner to score.
Kalb (2-0) allowed four hits, walking five and striking out
seven in eight strong innings. Cerulo, Frazier and Canuso led RU's 10-hit
attack with two apiece.
Rutgers returns to action on Thursday, when it hosts Princeton at 3:00 p.m.
