WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ - Sophomore righty Jimmy Jansen
(Hillsdale, NJ) scattered seven hits over nine shutout innings to lead Rutgers
baseball to a 5-0 win over Monmouth this afternoon in West Long Branch. Jansen,
making his second start of the season, led Rutgers to its first shutout of
the 2004 season and fired the first complete-game shutout for RU since Jack
Egbert (Rutherford, NJ) blanked Virginia Tech in the opening round of the 2003
BIG EAST Tournament. With the win, Rutgers improves to 12-13 overall and extends
its winning streak to five games.
The Scarlet Knights' first run came in the third inning when Nick Cerulo
(Woodbridge, NJ) tripled to right-center and scored on a two-out single from
Graig Badger (Union, NJ). In the fourth, Jeff Frazier (Toms River, NJ) roped
a one-out double to left and scored when Colin Gaynor (Toms River, NJ) singled
two batters later.
Rutgers pushed across an unearned run in the sixth as Frazier reached on an
infield error and scored on a double to left-center from Rich Canuso (Monroe,
NJ). A two-run single in the seventh from Jeff Grose (Iselin, NJ), scoring
Cory Rodriguez (Bridgewater, NJ) and Badger, finished off the scoring.
Jansen allowed just three hits and one walk through six innings, retiring
the side in order in the first, fourth and sixth innings. In the seventh, Jansen
allowed a harmless two-out double and went 1-2-3 in the eighth inning. He yielded
three singles in the ninth, loading the bases with one out, but induced a popup
from pinch-hitter Shawn Ensel for the second out and struck out Justin Braun
to end the game.
Jansen (1-0) allowed seven hits and struck out five in his first career complete-game. He also walked just one hitter in the game after issuing eight walks in 4.0 innings in his only other start this season (3/17 at Florida Atlantic).
Badger was 2-for-3 from the leadoff spot, reaching base in four of five plate
appearances to boost his BIG EAST-leading on-base percentage to .543. Frazier
was 2-for-5 with a double and two runs scored, while Gaynor (2-for-3) and Rodriguez
(2-for-4) also contributed to the 12-hit attack.
Rutgers returns to BIG EAST play on Thursday, when it hosts Pittsburgh (17-5,
5-1 BE) on Thursday beginning at noon at the Class of '53 Baseball Complex.
