PISCATAWAY, NJ - Based on his performance in a tryout at Yankee Stadium last Friday, May 28, senior Shaun Parker (Mt. Holly, NJ) received and accepted a free agent contract with the New York Yankees. He is the second fifth-year senior to sign prior to the draft, joining Graig Badger (Union, NJ), who signed last week with the Toronto Blue Jays.
Parker, bothered by shoulder soreness during the middle of the 2004 season, came to Rutgers prior to the 2003 season after a standout career at Mercer County College. He began the 2003 season as the team's No. 2 starter - a distinction he held until injury forced him to miss a month of action this year. As a junior, Parker was 4-3 with a 4.78 ERA, holding Miami to just one hit over 6.0 innings in his fourth start of the season and limiting Virginia Tech to two hits in 8-plus innings in a key, BIG EAST victory. He also recorded victories over Notre Dame and Villanova last season, firing a five-inning no-hitter vs. the Wildcats to clinch the BIG EAST crown for the Scarlet Knights.
This season, he picked up wins vs. Old Dominion, West Virginia and Pittsburgh and finished the year with a 3-3 record. Parker, a 6-3 lefty, was 7-6 with a 5.07 ERA in his two-year Rutgers career, allowing 145 hits in 142.0 innings.
Parker flew to Tampa, FL on Tuesday to participate in Yankees' workouts and will be assigned to a team shortly.
