PISCATAWAY, NJ – Junior outfielder Jeff Frazier (Toms River, NJ) and junior pitcher Jack Egbert (Rutherford, NJ) were both selected on the first day of the 2004 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Frazier was chosen in the third round (73rd overall) by the Detroit Tigers, while Egbert was selected in the 13th round (389th overall) by Chicago White Sox.
Frazier hit a team-best .382 overall and .365 in BIG EAST play this season. He was among the league leaders in several offensive categories, including average (2nd), home runs (13, 2nd) and RBI (59, 3rd). He also led the league in hits with 79 and finished tied for third in doubles (16). Frazier was also third in slugging percentage (.657). He led the Scarlet Knights in batting average, at bats (207), runs (59), doubles, total bases (136), slugging percentage, hits, sacrifice flies (4), RBI, home runs and games played (53). He hit .396 vs. lefties and .377 vs. righties this season, while also hitting .420 with runners in scoring position and leading the team with 21 two-out RBI.
The all-time home run leader in school history (34), Frazier is also one of just nine players in school history with 200 hits, finishing the 2004 season with 220, which is fourth all-time. He is also fourth in school history with 167 RBI and fourth in total bases with 370. He was a Freshman All-America selection in 2002 and a Second Team All-America pick by USA Today/Baseball Weekly in 2004. He was a Cape Cod League all-star with the Chatham A's last summer as well.
Egbert posted a 7-4 record in 2004 - a 1-0 loss to Notre Dame prevented him from leading the BIG EAST in victories - and led the team in innings pitched (87.2). He has won 18 games in his three-year career – 10th-best on the Rutgers career wins list – and owns a 3.90 ERA as well. He was a standout in both the New England Collegiate Baseball League in the summer of 2002 and the Valley League in 2003, pitching the Winchester Royals to the league championship.
Four members of the 2004 team now have professional opportunities this summer, as Frazier and Egbert join Graig Badger (Union, NJ) and Shaun Parker (Mt. Holly, NJ), a pair of fifth-year seniors who signed with the Toronto Blue Jays and the New York Yankees, respectively.
