PISCATAWAY, NJ – The addition of two key transfers, pitcher Sean Spicer (Toms River, NJ) from St. Peter’s College and catcher Jon Gossard (Harrington Park, NJ), of UMBC was announced today by head coach Fred Hill. Both are eligible to compete this coming spring.
Spicer, a New Jersey All-Rookie selection by the NJCBA, posted a 4-8 record as a freshman in 2004, registering half of the Peacocks’ wins during an 8-34 campaign. Spicer worked 74.0 innings and allowed 86 hits, walking 29 and striking out 52. He posted a 4.86 ERA and allowed a .290 opponent batting average.
Gossard hit .282 in 50 games for the UMBC Retrievers, adding seven doubles, one triple, one home run and 24 RBI. He finished fifth on the team in hits (48) and was fourth in RBI as well. UMBC posted a 14-38 record in 2004, including a 6-15 mark in the America East.
“We like both of them a lot,” said Hill. “They both have a chance to help us in the spring after strong freshman seasons. Spicer is a hard thrower and a real competitor and Gossard is a big, strong kid who will add depth to the catching position.”
They will join a group of talented newcomers that includes First Team All-State
selections Todd Frazier (Toms River South) and Vinnie Sangemino of Nutley and
Third Team All-State pick Tony Wargo of New Providence.
