Louisville Tops Rutgers Baseball, 3-1

LOUISVILLE, KY - For the second-straight day, pitchers highlighted the Rutgers-Louisville baseball game with B.J. Rosenberg of the Cardinals out-dueling senior Matt Pustay (Hamilton, NJ) of the Scarlet Knights as Louisville earned a 3-1 victory over Rutgers Saturday afternoon at Jim Patterson Stadium.

Louisville (9-14, 2-0 BIG EAST) scored a pair of runs on three doubles in the seventh inning to break a 1-1 tie and give the Cardinals the victory over the Scarlet Knights (6-12, 0-2 BIG EAST).

Rosenberg gave up no earned runs and just one overall, allowing five hits, while striking out six Scarlet Knights in seven innings to earn the victory for the Cardinals. Despite a shaky seventh inning, Pustay was effective in seven innings of work for Rutgers, allowing just two earned runs (three overall) on seven hits with a pair of strikeouts and no walks in the loss.

After being shutout for the first time this season on Friday, Rutgers jumped on top of the Cardinals early, plating a run in the first inning to stake a 1-0 lead on Louisville. Senior Jeff Grose (Iselin, NJ) lead off the game with a double to the gap in right-center field. He advanced to third base after the Cardinal third baseman dropped the ball as he was attempting to tag Grose out on sophomore Todd Frazier's (Toms River, NJ) fielder's choice, allowing both runners to be safe. During the next at-bat, Frazier attempted to steal second base and was caught in a run down for the second out of the inning, allowing Grose to score from third.

Louisville put runners on the corners with two outs and capitalized on a Rutgers error to get the run back in the second inning. Scarlet Knight catcher Frank Meade's (Linden, NJ) pickoff attempt at third base fell short of third baseman Tim Querns (Cherry Hill, NJ), dibbling to the outfield, which allowed Daniel Burton to score for the Cardinals.??

Offenses for both teams then fell silent for more than four innings before the Cardinals plated two runs in the seventh inning to take the victory. After getting an out to open the seventh frame, Pustay gave up back-to-back doubles which brought home the eventual decisive run. The Cardinals got a third double in the inning to add an insurance run, making it 3-1, before Pustay got out of the inning.

With the two-run lead, closer Griffin Bailey worked the final two innings for the Cardinals, recording four strikeouts without giving up a hit or a run.

Sophomore reliever Tim Woodhull (Princeton Junction, NJ) worked a perfect eighth inning for the Scarlet Knights, but three strikeouts in the ninth inning did Rutgers in. ?? ??

Rutgers and Louisville will wrap up their three-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Jim Patterson Stadium. ??
